Well, knowing what I know now - if I had a baby shower again - the ONLY thing I would have wanted - ADULT conversation, ADULT food and yes, some of the ADULT beverages and NO poop/diapers/food/potty/clothes or any other baby anything. AND NO BABY GAMES!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah, yeah yeah - it's called "baby" shower, but since after baby is born no one will talk to you about anything BUT the baby for months and years to come, I don't want to see/hear/think baby at a baby shower.
As far as presents - I always think of a bridal shower as something nice for the bride, so probably wouldn't go to the registry. I would think spa cert, restaurant cert - things like that.

OH! Another baby shower question. I have heard of doing "diaper raffles", whereby the guests are encouraged to bring a pack of diapers to be entered into a raffle for a prize. Are these common? Is this sort of blatant grab at an additional shower gift considered horrible or are people generally fine with buying a pack of diapers for a friend/relative? And if you've ever been to a shower where they had one, what was the raffle prize? I'll be the naysayer here - I hate this new trend. If I want to get you diapers, I'll buy diapers. If I want to buy you an Ergo carrier, swing or playmat, that's what I'll buy you. Please don't have a diaper "raffle" to "ask" me to buy both.

Diaper raffles don't bother me if a host wants to put that in the invite. I feel absolutely no pressure to buy a box and pick something else on the registry. I use cloth diapers and will bring some of those if the mother to be shows any interest. It took only a month of using disposables before I was horrified by the waste and chemicals. I promptly switched to cloth diapers, cloth wipes and never looked back.

I don't get invites to any showers/weddings any more. Too old, family too far away, friends are in the same boat.
After looking at all these comments ..... wow have times changed.
When these things were happening in my life the showers were all women. Cake, ice cream, simple games, practical gifts. I remember making nut/mint cups out of triangles of white flannel shaped into diapers with a small safety pin. Then they were dipped in wax and set to dry. One cup had a bit of mustard in it for the door prize.
Very simple.
