I've been thinking about buying disability insurance. My former employer was SS exempt and I do not have sufficient quarters to qualify for SS disability. What disability my employer offered was strictly short term and I knew folks who were "let go" because they had to stay off a month longer than the company allowed. As I am the sole breadwinner for myself and my field is physically demanding I am seriously considering it. So I have queries. Do you have a separate disability policy? Why or why not? What made you decide to get one? Where did you go? I may be opening a can of worms but. . .maybe not.

I would also be interested in seeing answers to this. Based on the genetics in DH's family, this is a very real possibility for him, and his family is quite familiar with how many months/years it takes for SS disability to be approved.

I have long term disability insurance through a company that only writes to people that do what I do. It is underwritten by New york life. The policy pays regardless of SS and it pays if I can't do what "I" do I don't have to be fully disabled.
I basically have three policy's wrapped up together that includes my life insurance-but I didn't have to do it that way. It pays based on a % of my salary that I can pay to have increased or choose not to as my salary goes up. It also has "cost of living adjustments" built in so if I got disabled now over time the amount I am paid would increase slowly-that I do believe is tied into the SS cost of living increase.
