The bones of Elizabeth I, Good Queen Bess, lie mingled with those of her sister, Bloody Mary, in a single tomb at Westminster Abbey. But are they really royal remains — or evidence of the greatest conspiracy in English history? If that is not the skeleton of Elizabeth Tudor, the past four centuries of British history have been founded on a lie. And according to a controversial new book, the lie began on an autumn morning 470 years ago, when panic swept through a little group of courtiers in a manor house in the Cotswold village of Bisley in Gloucestershire. The king, Henry VIII, was due at any hour. He was travelling from London, in great discomfort — for the 52-year-old monarch was grossly overweight and crippled by festering sores — to visit his daughter, Elizabeth. The young princess had been sent there that summer from the capital to avoid an outbreak of plague. But she had fallen sick with a fever and, after weeks of bleeding, leeches and vomiting, her body was too weak to keep fighting. The night before the king’s arrival, his favourite daughter, the only child of his marriage to Anne Boleyn, had been dangerously ill. In the morning, Elizabeth lay dead. Elizabeth’s governess, Lady Kat Ashley, and her guardian, Thomas Parry, had good reason to fear telling the king this awful news. It would cost them their lives. Four of Henry’s children had died in infancy and, of the survivors, one — Edward — was a sickly boy of five and the other an embittered, unmarried woman in her late 20s. I've pre-ordered the book for mother's Kindle. Thanks for the reference, Tennesseer. I think she'll enjoy this one.

It does, Tennesseer, and it's just mother's kind of content. A combination of mystery and history should keep her interested.

It certainly explains the obvious male pattern baldness and the lack of any apparent bosom as evidenced in the official portraits.

Wasn't there rumor that a servant was killed for seeing her without make up? Maybe that was a cover up and they really saw her/him without clothes and figured out the secret! I hope one of you come back with details after reading the story. But just the juicy parts.

That would be so cool if it was true. Although, she is made out to be super-cool even if she was a woman. I just always assumed she was a celibate lesbian. No matter what, the person who ruled the country during that time was pretty bad-ass.

No matter what, the person who ruled the country during that time was pretty bad-ass. I'll have to check out the book, but from what I've read/seen on the History Channel, Elizabeth had several secret lovers among English royalty but never got married as a shrewd political move. I've also read that she may have had at least one child secretly. In other words, I don't quite buy these latest allegations, although it may be possible that the author uncovered a conspiracy to discredit the queen during her lifetime.

Sounds to me like someone can't stand the fact that the greatest monarch of all times was a woman...

LOL - oped. That could very much be true. I have watched the movies about her, and some documentaries. I wouldn't say that I know enough to render an opinion. I just like the idea that we could discover something so drastic, so many years later.

I don't know - finding remains isn't that exciting to me. I know they died, and they were buried somewhere. But finding out she was really a man, or had a child, or something - that is scandalous. Everyone dies.

Everyone dies. But found underneath a parking lot (where once stood a monastery)? Historians were never sure where he was buried. But you are right. If it's determined Elizabeth was a he, that would be scandalous and so very interesting. If you enjoy reading historical fiction, may I recommend author Sharon Kay Penman. Her books focus on the history of Wales spanning the 11th through the 13th centuries, its medieval princes and Wales relationship with England. Another series of books she has written are on the Plantagenet family focusing mostly on Angevin King Henry II, his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine, and their son Richard the Lionheart. All are good reads if you like medieval history with a bit of fiction thrown in to fill in the blanks.
