I have a sister that has Hashimoto's Thyroiditis; it's pretty much just a matter of time before something goes wrong with my thyroid, apparently. Know of any other relatives that have it too? That's the kind my family has. There's some research I saw that if you have the antibodies (or whatever it is they test to confirm Hashimoto's) that you should get your TSH regularly check even though it's normal and start taking Synthroid/whatever as soon as your levels start creeping up. Doing it that way keeps you on a lower dose for longer which is good since the meds can wreak havoc on your bones. BTW - My rx is Synthroid no generics. The main reason is because there's multiple generics out there and you can't really control if you get a different generic each time you go, and that difference between the generics can really screw with your levels easy. So I stick with Synthroid because it will always be the same amount of meds/fillers each time I refill. You could do that with the other brands out there too.

I am still within normal ranges; but since Mom is hypo and one sis has Hashimoto's the rest of us sisters get our thyroid levels checked at least once a year. IDK if my brother does.

When getting the thyroid tests done, make sure they do the T4 test. My DD had thyroid issues and still does. They missed it until they did the T4. The radio active thyroid treatment ruined her endocrine system. She got this from that azhat sperm donor father genetic defect. I would say this is a generational curse.

There's a fair number of males on my mom's side and only one has had thyroid problems and it was Graves' disease (hyper). To be fair they could just be like men that don't go to the Dr, but none of them or overweight or anything like that. Hypothyroid usually sticks with the females.

Well interesting. I got a blood test at the docs, yes, have been really tired for a long long time. Turns out my thyroid function was low and the doc put me on thyroid meds. She also wanted to put me on cholesterol meds but mine was 229 and I refused. I will try to correct it with diet and if not I still don't think its high enough to go on meds for it. Statins can cause lots of issues. So a surprise. Maybe it will help my weight gain issue. Maybe you should just keep on keeping on.

Nearly all the females in my family have thyroid issues, including myself with an under active thyroid.

Have you had an appointment yet, thyme? I'm anxious to see what you learn. It can't be easy feeling like the human equivalent of a dust mop all the time.

My appointment isn't until next week. I don't know why it took me a month to get in the with the doctor, but it did.

Must mean you've got a busy doctor. That's not always a bad thing. It means a lot of people think he/she is a good doc! I hope you'll keep us informed, thyme. I'm concerned about the way you're feeling.

My appointment is today. I'm super nervous. If she can't come up with a nice, neat issue, then my problem won't be so easy to solve. If she does come up with a nice, neat issue - then I have a health problem that needs to be managed. I hate living this way, and my mood has improved since I researched thyroid problems. I had so much hope that I can take a test, get an answer, take a pill, and be my old self. But now I have to face that might not happen - there is a potential breakdown on each of those steps.
I have never been one to be upset about getting old, but this one really annoys me. I don't need to be young and perky, but having my body just stop working - that is unacceptable to me. Only 40 or so more years to go.

Only 40 or so more years to go. I know exactly what you mean! I have my own issue I've been trying to get to the bottom of for over 6 months. That's on top of the undetermined -itis I have. I've been through 2 orthopedists, 2 rounds of physical therapy, shots and meds, and it still hurts every day. None of my issues are nice or neat. So far, I can't even find out exactly what's causing them or how to resolve them. Getting old isn't looking like a lot of fun right now. Good luck to you!

Good luck Thyme, but remember you won't be getting a definitive answer today, gotta wait on the blood test! I hope it's all nice and neat and easy for you.

@patstab , try health products with NEM in them, that's Natural Eggshell Membrane. I started using one by Genuine Health and my own doctors were floored with my results enough that they want to now take me off Fosamax. Another company that makes products with this is called Jamieson.

Joints and bones, my bone density went up by 3% in one year alone on this. It floored my doctors. I get my supplements from an online supplier here in Ontario called National Nutrition.

It went well. I feel very warm and fuzzy about my doctor right now. She was very helpful.
She did say that thyroid and chemical-imbalanced induced depression have many of the same symptoms, so if it isn't anything wrong with the thyroid, she suggested anti-depressants to see if that helps. She is also going to test a variety of other things. So, I will let y'all know when the blood work comes back. She said maybe today, but they only work a half-day, and my appointment was the last of the day yesterday. So, I'm thinking Monday is more likely.
I'm considering counseling, too. I'm afraid I have developed some really bad habits that have interfered with me doing important things, and I'm wondering if someone could help me come up with some strategies to make me not do those things anymore. Maybe I'll ask her for a referral regardless of the test results.

There are other things that can cause those symptoms as well. It took a LONG time for my doctor to finally test and diagnose me with Lyme's disease. I was treated but still had years of chronic fatigue that was very debilitating. I am doing well now but certainly not the same as i was prior to having it.

I have to go back middle of August as doc didn't like my cholesterol numbers 229. I don't want to take statins, so I'm hoping diet, exercise, and even the thyroid meds from what I've read will help. I feel sooooo much better. I'm still tired but stay up way to late at night so my fault. I like to read, watch TV, play on the computer, and never have enough time in the day to do all I like to do. I'll be 68 next birthday. My biggest complaint is arthritus that is feeling better but I have my left knee that is giving me problems. I need to get an MRI I guess of that knee and see what's wrong. I stepped down off one of the back steps and popped it backwards some months ago and its never recovered, I kept thinking it would, likely tore or stretched something in it. As hubby says, they will likely tell me to stay off it for a few months and I don't have time for that. 229 would be a great number for me! We have familial hypercholesterol issues. My cholesterol was 343! Ack! I started on Crestor and now it is down to 219, the lowest it has ever been in my entire life. I was 279 when i was in college. My sister and dad had the same issue.
