I was reffering to her daughter refusing to pet-sit. I am not sure if it was a true story or copy of something...however! My daughter is 5.

Northeastern is a university that requires internships to graduate. They have a very well-oiled program in place, so all of their students come out with some professional experience. I am assuming that your daughter does not go to Northeastern, and this piece of information will not help you at all. As far as your daughter getting a professional internship doing marketing, I doubt that is in the cards for this summer. Those are normally set up long before summer begins.
It is time she lowers her sites. I don't know how much food service experience she has, but if no restaurants in your area will hire her, she should explore other types of low-skill jobs.

Your daughter should be running a farm by now... She makes her bed, takes out the returnable bottles, picks up her toys, puts the laundry in the washer and dryer, and makes sandwiches. Does that count?

No. You should instead pay a stranger to do those things and then complain that no one will hire your daughter.

Does that count? That's it? Sheesh, Swamp, you failed Parenting 101. Kid oughta be investing her piggy bank money in a Roth by now, and doing her own research on it, too.

Does that count? Swamp! I knew you were not having an adult daughter but your post threw me off base! The post about how you were helping daughter and paid her bills and she didn't want to pet sit! WHat was THAT? I think in Doxie's thread...

I think she should work on the farm too. Everyone should have the job equivalent of shoveling shit when they are a teen. Yeah! It builds character

Guys! Kids don't become adults becase they are 18. It is only 1 day after they were 17! One day doesn't make them adults. She is still a teen, free spirit, a kid. Happy and crazy in a good way. I only wish she was responsible and maybe she is - I just don't have time to see it. I am always here at freaking store and can't figure out if my DD is what...adult or not! Yes, and when I was 14, 15, 16 and 17, I found my own jobs without my mother's help, as did my parents and grandparents before me. Heck, two of my grandparents were fully supporting themselves at 14. So again, stay out of this. Let her figure things out now while she's young and the stakes aren't that high. How is this girl supposed to build any kind of self confidence if she can't do anything without having her mother swoop in and take over? Yes, you can offer advice and share wisdom, but keep it at that.

Oh, roommate. Looney's daughter is a free spirit! Free spirits can't be expected to do mundane things like support their own summer expenses. She's a free SPIRIT!

First you lament that she can't find a job and then you give excuses why she can't work. Free spirit my ass. Make up your mind

Don't worry, I have a lot of stamina. Mostly because I'm not busy running two businesses and micromanaging my adult child's life.

Free spirits are not great marketing people. Marketing isn't as creative as it appears. Most of it is knowing the numbers. Interpreting sales and market research data, as well as being able to quantify the success of the marketing efforts. I am not sure how marketing got such a artsy reputation - it is hard core business.

You know where I see a lot of free spirits? At the farmers' markets selling organic produce. Heck, she could practice marketing too!

Looney, just for you, I'll give you a serious response to your OP. Tell your daughter that you're not paying her expenses this summer (and follow through!). Then tell her that if finding a job herself is too difficult, she can work at the farm/farm store for the standard wage you're paying hired help instead. You will quickly find out if her claim is legit, and if she really needs the money for stuff, she knows how to get it. Voila! Problem solved.

The odds of a freshman getting a summer job related to their major is ridiculously small unless they happen to know someone or are willing to work for free doing grunt work. If she's in marketing, she's not going to get a job thinking of ideas or anything. The types of marketing related jobs that I know friends got (and I got) were things like passing out promotional gifts, working ticket booths, and other such things. Most of those were volunteer gigs, with a few getting lucky enough to get a job with like Red Bull where you'd pass out Red Bull at college events and get to drive the Red Bull car. Though those were pretty much who you knew too.
If she's wanting to actually earn money at a job her best bet would be to try and find a sales job and look for volunteer gigs that are more directly related to marketing.

What if a student can't find a job? Then they will either go hungry or find one. It's a simple thing.
If you don't know if she is responsible or not, loony, the best way to find out is to let her figure it out for herself. If she finds a job, she's responsible. If she doesn't (or won't) and keeps bugging you for money, she's not.

Swamp, remember how in the Doxie thread, you took Doxie's mom's point of view? Looney thought you really had a daughter who wouldn't pet sit. I knew she was confused then, but I didn't think it was worth a personal attack to try to correct her. Looney, I suspect your daughter could get a fast food job or cashier at Walmart. No, that's probably not what she wants. My daughter, who is now a pharmacist, worked at a pharmacy all through college. Was she the pharm tech? No, she rang up purchases at the front cash register and stocked the shelves in the rest of the store. I think she was in pharmacy school before he let her work the pharmacy cash register.

I agree with you that tlooney daughter can work at few places other than working at farm. We as a Mom we always best for our kid and sometimes we worry more than what's necessary.

Would we really rather teach our young people how to sell sweatshop goods to the masses than how to interact with the local community doing something with a tangible outcome? I don't see how schlepping stock at Wal-Mart will bring more self-confidence and responsibility than learning to grow her own food would.

I can see how if I had a business I might not be the best person to teach my child the value of hard work via a crappy job. If my kids knew they could play me, and I knew it, too, I could see a lot of "Oh - I know you have that really fun thing tonight, so you can knock out a little early" or not being willing to drop the hammer for a job not done well. Just me. I would like my child to get knocked around by a neutral third party, not me.

Yes, there can be something to be said for having your kid work for someone else if you can't be the bad guy sometimes.
On the other hand, it might teach more to a kid about being responsible if they are responsible for living things that will die and/or cost your own family money if you blow them off. Blowing off a Wal-Mart job won't have any real consequences except having to go down the street to the Baskin-Robbins to look for a new job.

Because if she got the Walmart job, she'd be getting it, working it and keeping it on her own without having her mother micromanage her every move. If you have a tendency to micromanage your kids, wanting them to work for someone else shows a bit of common sense.
Loony, I was raised to make my own decisions and live with the consequences. But one very big advantage of being raised that way was developing a sense of confidence and self reliance early on. I was always able to take care of myself much better than most people my age. This world is a big, tough place that isn't very kind to people who are dependent, entitled or weak. If you really care about your daughter, you need to make damn sure she can take care of herself and think for herself before you die. You're not going to live forever.

I can't imagine her not being able to find a job. DD has a job and still has employers contacting her. She even got called by her old restaurant for serving. She got called for a full-time dispatch position. There's plenty of jobs out there for someone willing to work.
