I think people going overboard isn''t too out of the ordinary - either suicides or accidents (or foul play) for the Cruise Ship lines... I think there's something like 10 people a year go missing and it's been a pretty steady number for the last decade or so. I think that's across all the cruise lines - not just Carnival. I kinda figured the number would be higher - you got 1500 - 2000 people with access to never ending alcohol (and whatever they bring on themselves, plus whatever other mind altering stuff they are doing) in an atmosphere of "I'm on vacation! Yahoo!" so lowered inhabitions (in addition to the alcohol/drugs) with easy access to being able to climb over or onto a railing. People do weird things when in the "Yahoo! It's a party! Let's get CRAZY!" kinda atmosphere.
I think these incidents get more media attention, now.

For the most part, I think Carnival has had a big hand in creating their own luck.

I'm a Carnival shareholder and I wouldn't take one of their cruises.
They aim for the bargain-seekers and I think there's a higher percentage of the party-till-u-puke crowd in that market. Sometimes people do stupid stuff when they get drunk. (Locally, we had a young woman leave a moving Party Bus via the emergency exit and get run over by at least 4 cars when she landed on the highway.)
No guarantee that alcohol was involved and maybe we'll never know, but it's a good bet.

I have been on Carnival Cruise for more than 10 times and I never had a problem with them. You will run into those kind of people in any cruise line. That was my experiences after about 30 times of cruising with different cruise line.

Maybe I'm missing something or a total party pooper, but I've never been one of those wild party, drink until you puke types. And I'm not one to lower my inhabitions to the point where I'll start climbing on cruise rails or leap out of moving busses.
I got drunk once to see what it was like, to see what was so great about it. I didn't care for it.

There is a higher percentage of them during 3/4 day cruises. Start getting into 7 or more day ones and they are solidly families looking for a nice vacation.

I don't understand how they can afford to drink that much. I bought the soda package on my alaskan cruise and I wasn't spending any more than that on beverages.

We've done 2 Carnival cruises. They were both 7 day cruises. I didn't see any crazy partying and I'd definitely go again. naggie's right; the drinking/partying crowd tends to take the shorter cruises, according to what I've read on cruisecritic.

We've never been on a cruise but we're thinking of going next year, probably a long southern carrabean cruise (one that stops at multiple islands).
I work with some people that love to cruise and do every chance they get, but they talk about doing stuff I'm not at all interested in - namely gambling and going to night clubs - are cruises fun for introverts who want to read a lot and explore the different islands, or are you obligated to be an extroverted party person to have a good time?
Is there a particular cruise line that caters to the stick in the mud/boring people as opposed to the party animals?

Is there a particular cruise line that caters to the stick in the mud/boring people as opposed to the party animals? I think a lot of people just like to hang out on deck with a good book and vegetate, with no need to buy or prepare food, clean house, etc. There's also no need to pack/unpack at each destination, find your way from one city to another, etc. Everyone has different reasons for going on a cruise. DH and I took a cruise on Innersea Discoveries in Alaska last year and it was fantastic- a 76-passenger ship with a smart, curious, active group of people and no one trying to out-drink, out-dress or out-eat each other. Heck, the stateroom doors didn't even have locks on them. We came back totally refreshed. Unfortunately, small ships charge hair-raising prices, so we're waiting till next year to do it again.

They are pretty much in line with same concept. They have a program that cater to all different segment of the mass. People goes to cruise with different reason. You are more likely to find what you are looking for then not. It's never hurts to try.

I have only been on Princess, Oceania and Uniworld, but they were all suitable for relaxing on the deck and exploring the ports. Drinks were a bit pricey but we were always able to bring a couple bottles of the local wine or liqueur on board at port stops. It's nice having someone else cook and clean for a change.

I think Tiny Speck is right, going overboard on a cruise isn't that uncommon. I imagine people die several times a year on each cruise line that way. It's just not that widely published.
People die every year by falling off the grand canyon too. But they keep it pretty quiet.

Happy,
The family and I went on a seven day Caribbean cruise in April. It was just what you are describing, stopped at five different places in seven day. It was great. We were on Royal Caribbean, I would recommend them. No obnoxious drunk people that we ran into, although there were probably a few around. PM me if you want more details.

After watching the movie, "The Titanic" I swore I'd never get on a cruise ship. Hi lone. Have a good one. That is one funny chicken!

And I love to looking at sea....It gave me an such of calmness. I think there is a reason that almost everyone seems to be drawn to water and waves. I haven't yet put together why that is. So, I know what you mean by the calmness. Sitting on an ocean beach is what does it for me. Maybe if I could be assured that I and my fellow passengers would be plucked off the ship as soon as there was a problem, I might consider a cruise. However, reading about ship loads of passengers being stranded at sea for days, living in filth, or even drowning, does little to persuade me.You have a good weekend, too. Thanks lone. Sometimes you just have to take a chances to find out what's that all about. If you don't you will never know what's out there. That's just my opinion.

We have been on Carnival about 6 times and another line once. Carnival has 2 pools on their ships. One is the 'party area'. Band, water slide, dancing, BINGO, games, etc... The other pool area is quiet. You can sunbathe, sleep, read, people watch and they ask that you use earbuds to listen to music if you go to that pool. The dining room has music, a CONGA line, whatever after your meal. If you aren't interested, leave after dessert. And the fares are cheap if you can wait until 30-60 (don't pay 120 days in advance) days before sailing. There are ports in different states. You probably wouldn't have to pay for airfare if you can plan ahead.

People die every year by falling off the grand canyon too. But they keep it pretty quiet. My sister once had a boyfriend that was fantastically handsome but dumb as a bag of rocks. We were all at the Grand Canyon and he was leaping around from rock to rock right at the edge. The rock there is scree and not always firm, you can constantly hear small pieces breaking off and dropping into the chasm below. My sister cautioned him to get back from the edge. He turned to look at her with a totally disgusted look like she was an idiot and sneered, "if it were dangerous, they'd put a fence around it!" Maybe that story belongs on Phil's thread about how humanity has eliminated survival of the fittest and is getting dumber. Then again, Athena's story about the girl jumping out the exit of the party bus could restore our faith that Darwinian selection is still happening.

If anyone is shopping for a cruise, I recommend vacationstogo.com. They sell tickets from all cruise lines. Some of the "deals" aren't that great, but some are fabulous. If you are flexible on dates, the prices seem to really drop as the departure date gets closer and some rooms are still unsold. I am going on my next cruise in about a month.

We did a Windjammer cruise off the coast of Maine for our honeymoon. I think it was 3 nights. We got to help with the rigging if we wanted to. I think we had a whopping 12 cabins though, so you will feel the seas.

I'm with lone. I'd rather sit on a beach someplace I can leave than be trapped on a ship in the ocean. Had there been any kind of bad weather, that disabled ship would have gone down. It wasn't even sitting up straight in dead calm water.
