On my way to work this morning I heard this mattress commercial from a very reputed mattress firm. Long story short, it said that in 8 years the mattress is ready to be replaced. Over the years, due to the sweat and the skin human beings shed while they are sleeping, the mattress doibles in weight. Since its so unhygienic to sleep in, time to replace it in 8 years. WTF? Has anyone else heard this? I always thought you kept the mattresses for a longer time, at least they are nicely functional ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/idunno.gif) I am thinking its just a pre, plain marketing tactic. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/angry.png)

Then why do they give you a 10 yr warranty or even 20 yr warranty on some of the mattresses??

I've heard that too. We've only had one old mattress, but it was a lot heavier than our new one... IMO if it doesn't stink and you aren't getting hives from sleeping on it, it's probably OK, dead skin or not. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/tongue.png)

Haven't heard the commercial, but that would imply mites burrow down underneath your sheets and mattress pad to store dead skin flakes or multiply.
Since its rare for my sweat to get down to the mattress pad level and it dries, I'm curious as to how this increases weight in anything? Sounds like a marketing ploy like Shampoo - rinse & repeat.

Wouldn't surprise me. Allergy covers would stop that from happening though. I think most mattresses just wear out and provide less support.

I'm thinking it's a marketing ploy. My mattress is covered by a mattress pad and then a fitted sheet. The sheets get washed every week and the mattress pad atleast once a year (I try to do it spring and fall). Not much gets to the actual mattress - I've had cats barf on the bed and that didn't make it past the mattress pad.
I'm thinking maybe the majority of people don't use a mattress pad and/or don't change the sheets often... that could definitely lead to stains and whatnot on the actual mattress.
Ok, if the ad is not a marketing ploy - maybe it's an ad targeted towards whatever segment of society doesn't use mattress pads and sheets...

We actually have two mattress pads. One thin one that has a plastic type backing that is next to the mattress. Then a thick cushy one over that. We wash that one every couple months. Plus the fitted sheet.

'I thought matresses were good for 20 years.'
This could be the problem. They last too long and the retail stores need some business. I've heard the commercial also and just laughed. But there are some people that believe everything that is said.
Have you heard the car insurance commercial where the lady believes everything she read on the internet? The internet can't put anything on that isn't true, the internet said so. As she goes off with her 'French Model' boyfriend.

Depends on how hard you are on the mattress. At our house, think Twilight:Breaking Dawn Part I..

Huh, I could be terribly wrong, but I didn't take MMC for the type to watch a Twilight movie. Haven't seen one myself, so maybe I'm missing the reference...
