You cant buy high capacity magazines in some states now. You will be able to print them. Government cannot police everything as much as some would like for them to do. Police can scan crowds now for guns, it will be harder with plastic guns. Technology makes governments more able to oppress, but in this case it makes people more able to protect their God given rights, among those rights, the right to bear arms. Many in the government want no guns. The pro-gun people are winning the battle now, but times change and public opinion changes. When public opinion wants to outlaw more guns, printers will make that a moot point. I actually think you're missing the big picture of what this milestone really represents. The pro-gun people are NOT winning. The pro-gun people have lost- save for a slight majority in a tiny (population-wise) country that represents less than 3% of the world's population. This is a game changer because it's GLOBAL. People around the world will soon have unimpeded access to guns. Kinda makes dictators obsolete.. That's crazy- dictators have freaking loyal armies and tanks. Small arms don't bother them. And when people have had enough it is going to take more than a bunch of printed zip guns- it takes real weapons and ammunition. It takes forcing the people in the military to pick sides. Also you may have noticed in the middle east that a few incidents have occured- regardless of gun laws or availability of plastic goofery.

So far plastic still sucks for critical components. Overcoming that limitation will be a real game changer- nevermind the guns

So far plastic still sucks for critical components. Overcoming that limitation will be a real game changer- nevermind the guns No doubt. We may reach the point at which these things can operate using lightweight, high strength synthetic components perfect for firearms. We may see innovations in firearm technology where rather than try to print an existing design, something is designed specifically for this kind of equipment. As Steve noted- we're at the proof of concept stage.

The idea of "home printer arsenals" seems a bit ridiculous to me. A plastic firing chamber and barrel ? You've probably got better odds with Russian Roulette.

You know what else seemed ridiculous at the time, PT?
That the iPhone would ever be a serious business tool. According to the CEO of Motorola, it didn't have a keyboard, so its appeal would be limited.
Xerox sold the technology for the personal computer because the leadership there didn't see why the average person would need a computer.
Metal has limitations, too- and metal isn't automatically stronger than plastic.

And I would also remind you that once upon a time, it was assumed that digital music would kill the music industry. Technological innovation won't necessarily equate to the gun industry making no money. With a convenient iGuns account, who knows what's possible?

It isn't music at all. The whole gun manufacturing industry goes down. Even the military could just buy a gun plan and an array of printers. It will take a technological leap in materials first. Then there is the costs- just too easy to go to wal-mart and buy something cheap and reliable.
But for criminals the current tech is great. Printable melt away zip guns.

Unbelievable! Of all the wonderful and great possibilities there are for 3D printing technology, some misguided yahoo, decides that guns are the way to go.
What is wrong with people? Honestly?
Do you feel that threatened, is you penis that small, is your vision so myopic, is your imagination so stunted?
What about all the life affirming possibilities?
