What do you pay them? I broke down and hired someone who told me her rate was fifteen an hour. She brought a friend along who also charged fifteen an hour so my rate was actually thirty an hour. She did an okay job but thirty bucks an hour? Seriously? I never made thirty bucks an hour. I got her from a friend who said she was trustworthy. I'm thinking for that money I could go with a service who would provide their own stuff. But it's been years since I had a service so maybe I'm out of touch. The last time I had a service I had a three story townhouse with three bedrooms and three and a half baths. For seventy bucks. They did a fantastic job btw. She did a decent job but not fantastic and her helper wasn't that great at all. I'm confused.

I'd have told her friend to piss off if we hadn't discussed there being 2 people doing the job. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/grin.png)

I pay $15 per hour. If one gal comes and works for 4 or two come for 2 hours its a wash.
Ask them what they expect going forward. The first cleaning is usually the longest and most expensive.

She told me she would have another person but not that she was charging for her. Because she does my friends house before me, I thought she was just trying to cram two houses in one day not trying to double the money. I wonder if she did it to my friend this am?

But would you have paid her for twice as long if she came alone?
I always specify how many hours I want and the cleaning priorities for what to work.on first, and to only move in if she has time left.

I use a service because I don't want to be an employer and mess with 1009s, taxes, insurance etc. Plus if I get unhappy with the folks they send me I don't have to do anything except call up and request a new crew.
Every two weeks I pay $75 for a crew of two to clean a 4+2+den. I actually have the option of 1 person for 4 hours or 2 people for 2 hours. Either way, it's $18.75 per hour.
Yeah, it always helps to get clear exactly what is expected and for exactly how much BEFORE you begin. Sorry you have to deal with this now.

The service I used to use cleaned my ~2800 sq foot house (3 beds, 3.5 baths) with 2 people for $90. It was decent. I wouldn't eat off the floor, but I have pretty low standards for cleanliness.

This isn't a big house by any means. I only did it because I wanted someone on board for when I'm not here as DF will not clean the house ever. I've decided that I'm paying for two hours, period, from now on, and prioritizing her work. Dusting first, then kitchen, then bathrooms, then floors. I'm good with 60 bucks but no more than that. Two people should be able to do that, period. I'm not a professional and I can clean this whole house in less than four hours. Not much less but less. Took her and her buddy three and a half.

This sounds like a good plan. You could even set up a rotating schedule for her/them - here's the Week 1 Schedule and here's the Week 2 schedule. The hard-core basics would be on both lists (dust; wash countertops; scrub the sinks and toilets; vaccuum; mop floors) and other stuff could be every-other-week if necessary. And I agree that $15 per hour ($60 for 2 people for 2 hours) is very reasonable. If they give you a hard time over this price, find someone else.

We get our 1350 sq. foot ranch house deep-cleaned about every 5- 6 months. We have a cleaning team that we call from Merry Maids ( Molly Maids charges more ) and two people come and do everything. We don't want to pay for a biweekly service, so we take care of the rest of the housekeeping ourselves. But, since they have to do everything from top to bottom extremely throughly, we end up paying about $100. I feel it's worth it. DH not so much, but then, his eyesight and standards aren't so hot, but I love him.

I pay mine $55 for the whole house. I have no idea how long she is here. My husband said once he thought she was here between 3 and 4 hours. I don't really care - if she can clean the whole place in 45 minutes and charge me $55 - totally worth it.

![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/wte.png) Something is wrong with this picture. I've never used a cleaning lady. First time ever I hired a company to wash the windows at the Florida house and it was the best $100 I've ever spent. They even applied Rain-X to non glass windows.

OMG, is that ever the truth, MM. With kids in the house it's a given that the place will be trashed in a nano second after being cleaned. Plenty of years to enjoy a clean house after the kids are grown.

The term "maid" too demeaning. I am surprised we haven't PCed it into something like domestic household engineer.

When I hired Merry Maids, the first cleaning took 3 women for 3 hours to clean 3000sf on 2 levels. The cleaning rate was $115 each time.
We have continued to use them, however, their cleaning time has dwindled to 2 ladies for 1 hour and I'm still paying $115. While getting our house ready to sell, I was cleaning myself and discovered there were a a lot of places (like under a chair on a hardwood floor) that hadn't been touched in months. It turns out they were only spot cleaning what showed and the rest was ignored.
I called Merry Maids and politely told them since the house was now for sale, and we had the need to keep it as spotless as we could on a daily basis, they were to suspend the service until further notice.
There will be no further notice. For $230/mo for 2 hours and 2 ladies, we're back to doing it ourselves.
