Do not doubt me, ever most of the time... www.npr.org/blogs/thesalt/2013/03/19/174739752/whole-milk-or-skim-study-links-fattier-milk-to-slimmer-kidsI knew this at the time, I am also aware of the danger of a low fat diets and the brain development of kids (and adults, too). We're coming up on almost 40 years of a government sponsored high carb, low fat fad diet and the results are in. We ought not be surprised they're wrong, but what amazes me is that so few people are aware of the fact we're fat because of nearly four decades of trying to be thin-- the government way. I got lampooned for lamenting the fact that McDonald's is foisting skim milk on people, but alas- here you are. Right. Again.

I thought you can ONLY buy whole milk? Can you buy it not whole? Can you bring your own container and take milk carton from the shelf, open it and pour half of it into your container and put milk carton back on the shelf and pay for your container at check out? in that case do they weigh it?

This has absolutely nothing to do with politics, or the markets. I'll move it to Everything Else.

Low "bad cholesterol" is associated with heart disease. High cholesterol is associated with longevity. Amazing, isn't it?

Low "bad cholesterol" is associated with heart disease. High cholesterol is associated with longevity. Amazing, isn't it? Low bad cholesterol (LDL) is far better than high bad (LDL) cholesterol which is associated with heart disease. High 'good' cholesterol (HDL) is associated with longevity.

I give DD organic whole milk. She is skinny and doesn't eat much. I've always felt like she needed the calories since she eats so little. DS will start drinking milk in a couple of months. He's much more solid than she ever was, so it will be interesting to see if he slims out when he starts walking.
DH and I drink regular skim milk.

I know I have lived through the "anti-dairy" drama before. Everyone says that everything in my diet is what is making people fat, but I'm not fat. Probably because I know what a real serving size is. I'm still normal weight, and I have 2% milk every day. Not 24 oz of milk, but half a cup on my cereal.

I wonder if the correlation has some relationship to what I like to call the "diet coke syndrome."
Diet coke isn't good for you in any way, shape or form. But, people think because it is low calorie, it can become a free for all. It always seems like the people drinking the diet coke are overweight. Clearly, just dropping the calories in soda isn't working. Is it these parents that want to help their kids out, so they give their kids skim milk under the same assumption that it must be better for their kids because it is lower in fat and lower in calories? Meanwhile, the rest of their diets may be off?

I was wondering that, too. Did the study take into consideration if those kids who drink low-fat milk also drink juice, eat fatty foods, exercise, etc.?

I know there is a study that rats that were given Nutrasweet gained weight faster than the rats that were given sugar. But, I have now told you my entire knowledge of that study. So helpful...

I just lump a lot of these studies in with the "Food Police". It is another bandwagon to jump on if you want. I think the best approach in my opinion is eating a variety of real, natural food. And, allowing yourself to enjoy other stuff in moderation.

Whole, low fat and skim milk are all "messed with" for most people.

I don't drink milk. It makes me gag. I do put a little 2% in my coffee and a little on my cereal (I don't drink it out of the bowl though). For my kids I buy 2%.

Fat in food is what makes you feel full, and helps food digest more slowly, keeping you feeling full longer. People who feel full don't snack (probably), so they aren't eating as many calories. If a couple of glasses of whole milk a day keep them from eating a snack every couple of hours, that probably means they're saving some calories there.

In other words, there's actually ZERO link between a diet high in saturated fat and heart disease. And there's NO link between high cholesterol and atherosclerosis. None.

But feel free to load up on those fatty ribs and other foods. I doubt you will see 9/19/2025.
