Well, closing was delayed 2 days due to a bank account verification of the buyer. The buyer wasn't exactly happy with the delay either. DH and I had already signed papers last week and FedEx them back to the closing agent on Thursday so she received them Friday. Yesterday afternoon, I received word that closing went through and we no longer homeowners! DH was kinda happy for the extra days as it turns out as it gave him more to work on the sprinkler that was kicking his butt for whatever reason and packing. He underestimated how long and how many boxes it would take. Since I did the initially packing of items for the 1st 2 moves for the items left, he didn't know. He's headed to his parents' house tonight so he can drop off the trailer (can't here due to HOA rules and we're also staying with family and want to let the person that owns the home actually park in their driveway), and we'll see him tomorrow! Now for DH to find gainful employment and us buying a new home. We are looking to have a house built, which will take 5-6 months once a contract is signed.

No, we don't walk away. But when we're holding on to something precious, we run.

Seems weird to cheer for not being a homeowner but I'll do it! Woohoo Taz and Mr.Taz. We are staying with my mom rent-free for the most part (our "rent" is the household groceries - which won't be the equivalent of our mortgage payment) so it will be nice not to have a mortgage payment for a few months. It will also allow us to save some more money for the downpayment, savings, new car, etc. Keep in mind, we did walk away with money which has already been ear marked for downpayment, new car, and pay off the accumulated credit cards from the past few months mostly due to completing the fix up of the house, DH's unemployment, and not wanting to fully deplete our savings in case it is needed. Paying the interest was worth our piece of mind. Not the YM thing to do, but we're not fully YM anyway.

You do what you have to do in hard times. DH being unemployed qualifies as hard times.
Glad you walked away with enough for down payment, car and paying off credit cards.

I signed off on the final paperwork, & my Mom's house now has new owners. Of course it's a bit sad to sell the house I grew up in, but I'm thrilled that someone new will now be living there. I'll miss the house, but not the long drives from my house to check on it.

However, as I have grown older and lost mom, I realize that I am actually glad that house is gone. They also had moved into a senior center so they no longer own real estate. I am very grateful for that and that we don't have to sell any real estate to settle dad's estate. I do drive past it when I am in the city where it is located.

As much as I loved that old house, it just didn't feel the same after Mom & Dad were gone. And, the school district I live in now is a much better one, so there really was no good reason to hang onto it. It really was a lot of time & effort to get it ready to sell, so, as hard as it was at the time, your parents probably did you a huge favor.

I know that and so does my sister.
I was thinking when I drove to take my dad to lunch that the house didn't feel like home after I moved out. We were lower middle class people and, while the house had 3 bedrooms, it was only 965 sq ft. My parents' apartment at independent living is larger than that.
My bedroom had two doors. It opened to the hallway and to the kitchen. After I moved it, my bedroom became the dining room and my sister's bedroom became the guest room. That was not the home I grew up in. My sister says the same thing.
