I don't know about this. If i owned a business i would not want the liability of someone bringing their child to work. I also think it would be distracting to the business and everyone else. I personally think it is kind of silly.

We're a secure building with clearance requirements. Not happening. They'd be bored to tears anyhow, I'd only bring them to show them what they DON'T want to do when they grow up! LOL

my company does participate, but they have a full-day schedule of activities and entertainment for the children. Because of that, I believe it's limited to kid aged 9-14 or something like that. The way they do it is really great.

I'd lose my job if I brought Gwen into the lab. She isn't authorized to be here. They made it very clear in an e-mail sent out last year that your behind is grass if they catch you bringing people into the lab that shouldn't be here.
They can be in your office if you have one, but most kids I think would be bored to tears sitting in an office all day.

Yeah, i think it would be better to just have a brief tour of the work place and then take the child to school or day care or home.

I took my son to work (after hours) when I was a single parent enough that I wouldn't have wanted to do it on purpose!
There were many late nights at the office where I would pick him up from his after school program, pick up something for dinner and bring it all in to the office. He would take over the conference table in my office and eat, do his homework, play on his DS, draw, "highlight" documents from the recycle bin, practice folding and launching paper airplanes, etc.
He is 17 now, and he actually has fond memories of these sometimes very long nights. He loved taking a break and heading down to the geedunk (navy slang for vending/snack area). He also loved interacting with several of my coworkers.
Funny how "mommy guilt" memories can be happy ones for our kids!

The way they do it is really great. My workplace does this too. The kids look forward to it! Although my kids have never been there yet as both are < 9 years old. The age requirement is 9-15 and the kids are kept occupied throughout the day. I see plenty of kids every year and they all seem to enjoy it. Moreover the day is counted as Alternate Learning Experience by local schools, so its not like they are missing school or anything. They get full credit at school for the day.

I'm not participating tomorrow because my daughter has school, but she does occasionally come in with me if she has the day off but I don't. We're a small 5 person casual office and no one minds. She's 10, well behaved and quiet, will sit in a corner in my office all day and watch stuff on Netflix with my ipad. I'll give her little jobs to do like shredding paper or organizing the supply closet. My office is boring...

I don't have kids, but I think bringing a kid to work would make them board out of their minds if it was for a full 8 hours. When/if I had kids of sufficient age, I might bring them in to do a tour, but I don't know about a whole shift.

I have brought my kids with me out of necessity. DD wants to come more often. DS thought it was boring.
If I have to bring them, it's usually for a half day and I take them on a tour of hte courthouse to see all my friends. The judges give them candy and soda.

My kids are too little. I took DH's nephew one year. He was about 10 at the time. It worked out really well. He really enjoyed it, and he seemed genuinely interested. He asked people questions and was very well-behaved. But I also have a job where I'm out and about a lot and not just sitting at a desk eight hours a day.
He did have to sit through a staff meeting. One of my coworkers gave him paper and markers and he made pictures.
I think whether or not it's a good idea to participate depends on your job, the child and the child's age.
ETA: We had an inadvertent "Take Your Child to Work Day" yesterday. DH didn't realize he had court for a case until Monday night. My MIL couldn't watch the baby, so DH brought him. It worked out because I was there, too, so I took him around visiting the ladies in all of the offices while DH did what he needed to do.

The way they do it is really great. When my kids were toddlers, I worked for a company that had a whole thing for about that age group. They went on a tour of the plant, and they fired up an engine, which spun, and blew wind at them, and they got a little talk about what the company did, and they all ate in the cafeteria with their parents, and they spent some time at their parent's desk, etc. I could see it valuable for that age group where kids are starting to understand the adult world. I don't think the purpose is to bring your preschooler to work for a day. The official website suggests ages 8 - 18 participate, which makes sense. I guess I could bring my kids in. They would be bored to death.

"Take Your Kids to Work Day" is absolute hell for those who don't have kids. The reason? Who wants to sit around and listen to a bunch of smarmy coworkers, who I already don't like and have to be paid to be around, jabber on and on about which of their snotty crotchproducts is the best? Not to mention, it's really fun to be forced to give some sort of obligatory compliment whenever someone shoves a smelly Elmer Fudd crackbaby in your face. These people really need to remember the fundamental rule of genetics, which is "two wrongs don't make a right". Plus, when I see their offspring's big round eyes and smiling faces staring eerily at me like they're fresh out of a scene from "Village of the Damned", I just know they're about to stab me with something.
Kids need to remain in their proper place, which is running wild on the streets until they get rounded up and sent to juvi.

I too, used to work for a company that set up a "program" for the visiting kids. I brought my DD to work when she was middle-school aged. She thought it was cool, especially when security showed the kids the camera system and "zoomed" in on each parent as we were working... ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/tongue.png) (But, at least I was working.) ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/wink.png)

Hey - one day those crotchproducts will be your geriatric caregiver. Pfft. Why do you think I married a much younger woman? In return for the inevitable sponge baths and spoon feedings, she'll get to run wild with my millions when I finally keel over, one day from retirement. Seems like a fair trade, no? I don't think so either. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/sad.png)

Be nice to 'em, Bob. Someday your Social Security payments are gonna come out of their wages. I'm not fond of structured Take Your Kids to Work Days. I used to bring DS in when he was little, on one of my days off. Those were the good old days when I had a real office with a door that closed, so he wasn't disrupting anyone's work but mine, and whatever work I got done was gravy anyway, since it was a vacation day. I think it's interesting that he ended up working for an insurance company- different department, though. He did attend one structured Kids to Work day where he spent most of the day in organized sessions without me. He was very annoyed. He preferred just hanging out in my office.

When I was working, I didn't have kids and I didn't like kids so I really didn't like those events.
Now, that I have kids, I don't work, but for a small fee I would gladly give you my kids to bring to your work. I am not picky where you work. Any place would do.
