Last night while watching tv, I noticed that one of the toenails on my left foot was broken and going to fall off. This was the toenail that was black after a pedicure. I haven't had any pain in the toe, but once half the toenail broke off, the toe did feel weird. I think it was just having that virgin skin showing.
A few hours later, in the middle of the night, I woke up in pain. My toe hurt. I got out of bed to see if my toe was okay, and much to my surprise (remember, it was the middle of the night, so I wasn't thinking too clearly) it wasn't the toe where the toenail came off, but the same toe on the other foot. I put some ice on it, and rubbed it a little, and then went back to bed. This morning, neither toe was in pain.
My husband said that sometimes his brain reverses the pain. Does that happen? Was it really my left toe that was hurting, but my brain thought it was my right toe? Why would I have unrelated pain? Why aren't I in any pain this morning? The whole thing is just weird.

The human brain is a really strange place, proceed with caution. And Thyme I have no answer for you.

Some people poke needles in their toes to ease back pain.

Some twins often feel the same the other may be experiencing. Sympathetic pain.
So if your two big toes were born at the same time, it's probably sympathetic pain the right toe was feeling for the left as they are twins.

LOL - I would ask my mom, but she couldn't see - do both feet come out at the same time?
(Also, it is my middle toe - my second toe - do toes have names like fingers do?)
If nothing else, I'm super happy that the black toenail is gone and there is a bit of a nail there. Just in time for summer. I will find a new pedicure place and get them painted before we have our first pool party.

Tenn, LMAO!!
Thyme, I have no idea how your brain is working and the only recommendation I have is to hurt another toe to see what happens tonight. ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/tongue2.png)
I hope your toenail grows back right. A friend of mine got a nail fungus from a salon and it grew back weird. Or her toe nails are just ugly. I'm not sure since I've only known her a few years. I guess I'll keep doing my own now. I don't even like black polish.

Well, to me it's obvious that your toes went for a midnight stroll without you and bumped into the coffee table and hurried back real quick, hence the pain!

I do think it's sympathetic pain.
However, good luck on your toe nail growing back correctly. I broke a toe in college (now 40 years ago), and it grew back with an odd toenail. Half was too thick, and half was too thin. The podiatrist worked some magic, and it is fine now. He didn't work it to correct a toenail, by the way. I had plantar fasciitis (still do but in remission), and he tried to help me with other issues.

LOL! ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/rofl.gif) Actually - I guess the toe I'm talking about is "Stay home."
