It's akin to geometry, but it's not the same thing as actually doing geometry. The same way a physicist can look at the velocity, direction, spin, wind conditions, and whatnot of a curve ball pitch and tell you how much movement it'll have as it crosses the plate. That's not even remotely the same thing as standing in a batter's box and hitting the thing.

Our school have Vo-Tech programs. Kids who are interested in studying a trade go there in high school. They still get some of the general education, but they can focus on learning a skill.

Then why can't you hold onto a job for more than a week? Bad industry? My job picker is broke? The economy currently sucks if you have failed to turn on the tv in the last, oh I don't know...four years.

Well being low income, as a single parent for years, kept me on the edge. Paying a huge sum of money for a divorce, pushed me over the edge. but I am doing great now, debt wise.

I did go on an interview last Friday, but they said they are hiring "slowly". Whatever that means.... I do have daycare lined up for when I do find a job.

Well, at least you're getting interviews. That's good news. True. I do have a couple letters to write tonight. It is a crappy market out there. And tons of people apply for every job. I have been doing way more surveys in my spare time. And if all else fails, there is always welfare, coach bags and crab legs. Actually, I would pass on crab legs. Can I just have MD blue crabs steamed instead?

Honestly, I asked the kids the other day, randomly... "What's the first rule of fight club"... They both immediately parroted, 'you do not talk about fight club' .... They assured me they hadn't seen it when I asked, but it is just so used everywhere... sometimes I think they learn more FROM that stuff, lol... When your kids are older, Chuck Palahnuik is a fantastic - if very, very creepy - author. He's one of my favorites, but writes about highly adult stuff. The Fight Club book was so well written that it sometimes gave me a visceral reaction, which is pretty hard to do for literature.

Maybe I'll read it first and see if son might be up for it. I'm, uh, probably a 'bad mom' winner for reading material... He was excited at the book sale yesterday when he found 4 Christopher Moore books he hadn't read yet... I also picked up the first Evermore book for daughter... Looked tweenie, anyway she read it last night... Did I mention we just finished listening to World War Z. Oh well, at least I get to talk to them about stuff ....

Maybe we should put together a YM internship program. We can have the unemployed folks intern at the various businesses owned by some of the folks here to try out different industries and beef up their resumes. I'm sure Loony would welcome the cheap help at her convenience store/high end organic food store. I know Milee owns a business but I can't remember what industry she's in at all. There have to be others. It could work.

Research skills. Not just how to find sources, but how to analyze them for bias, evaluate credibility, and connect them to a central theme. One of my good friends is a 10th grade English teacher and is consistently dismayed every December and May by the number of papers she gets which only cite to Wikipedia. We covered the scientific method in junior high, but its steps apply to so many other fields (even my current one, which is about as far removed from science as you can get) that I think it should be integrated into other courses. And I have NO idea how you'd teach this, but a course in understanding and participating in office politics might be useful. Agree with the other suggestions re: finance, life skills, etc. They should learn the REAL use of Wikipedia, Pulling the cited sources from the page and scrutinizing them.

DH and I have been having somewhat heated discussions about the new Common Core regulations. He's a HS ELA teacher, and he's more than a bit bent out of shape over the decision to increase NF reading material at the expense of Fiction. The ratio is something like 70% NF to 30% F, and he thinks it should be the reverse, if not nearly all F. I can see the rationale behind exposing students to NF, since that is probably primarily what they will deal with in future jobs, so I agree that some NF should be included, maybe 50/50. DH sees little value or depth in NF ("it's just facts, no emotion"), thinks they'll learn more from the F, etc. We've got different biases, and see different sides of the issue. Meanwhile, the students will be caught in the turmoil of changing curriculum, again, for a few years until things settle in, or swing back. On another note, I wish the schools wouldn't actively discourage students who want to challenge themselves. DS4 got his preliminary list of classes for sophomore year. At the bottom was a note from the advisor that he had to drop at least 2 classes because he had too many! Given that he is required to take Eng, SS, PE, Sci+lab, Math, and he intends to continue in Band & Orch, his options to drop are Span3 (usually required unless he has a 5 class minor in art), Health (needs to graduate, but can take later), and Music Theory (needs for Music Honors, can take later, but difficult to fit in). There are 9 periods in a day, he only needs to drop one course, not at least 2. What actually fits in his schedule is another matter altogether - scheduling is a nightmare w/ all of the music classes that meet only once per day.

My problem with NF is that lots of kids that age aren't interested. I think what you want to do is encourage life long reading, and face it, many people never pick up books after school. If you only give thm dry material, they are even less likely to pick up books unless they are assigned. There are some great studies on reading habits of adults. Most of us come around to NF, at least of a sort, but not if we don't keep picking up books...
There is also so much great stuff to learn about in fiction!
