I have a friend (seriously!) who e-filed their return a week ago. When they hit the transmit button they were not sure if they had included their bank routing number for the IRS to take payment for taxes due. The paper copy of the return was blank and it did not appear to be in the software (from what I was told).
Rather than risk being underpaid they sent in a paper copy of their return with a check for the amount due as well. Well, guess what - the IRS initiated the ACH Debit so now they've paid their taxes twice.
Will the overpayment be automatically issued or is there some action they need to take? Any ideas on how long this may take?
Any assistance is appreciated.

The overpayment will (or should) be refunded in 6-8 weeks, maybe upwards of 12.
