I've been reading more about this, and I am interested in getting some to try & see if we want to make the switch. I grew up with my grandparents using Kirk's and I seem to remember it being gritty (?) and harsh. Do I remember that wrong, or does anyone else have the same experience?
I am looking for something that's more gentle & natural to use as handsoap, body wash, and shampoo. Dr Bronner's has a liquid castile and I've seen recipes to make your own liquid from the bar soaps.
Do you use castile soap? If so, what's your opinion of it?

I've used Dr. Bronner's as a body soap and it didn't bug me. I have rosacea and eczema. I never tried it for washing the floors or windows.

Dh got into this a while back. I use it as a body scrub - I'll try it as shampoo once I finish off the current bottle. I think we've got the Bronner's brand. The bottle is covered in super tiny print and hard to read. I've used it as a cleaner with mixed results - making up how to use it as you go along isn't what I'd recommend. For some applications (tub and toilet) I'm told it needs to be mixed with baking soda for best results. I've tried that and wasn't super thrilled with the results. But my tub is pretty icky and I'm not super happy with any cleaner right now. It did work pretty well in the kitchen sink, straight. I have an older, white porcelain double sink. It got a lot of stuff off but didn't bleach the scratches back to white. But they were less noticible, if that makes sense.

We are a Dr. Bronner's household. We love the stuff. I have MCS so I can't use really any of the soaps, detergents, cleaners, fragrances etc etc etc that are out there. There's a bar in the shower (DH likes eucalyptus so that's what I get); I use the liquid and dilute it according to the teeny-tiny instructions on the bottle and put it in the soap pumps in the bathrooms and the kitchen for handwashing (lavender there - it's my favorite); I use the baby/unscented soap for making homemade cleaners and add my own essential oils; I also use it with vinegar as a fruit and vegetable wash (those bottles of commercial wash are really expensive!). I use the Sal Suds in a bucket of warm water for washing stuff (floors when vinegar is not enough; walls; pet messes, etc). Happy household here . . . Ps: I've heard of folks using the peppermint soap as toothpaste. Haven't tried that one! Another PS: because of my issues, I'd really be happy with any castile soap, because I can use it . I get the Dr. Bronner's because it's readily available, it's reasonably priced, the large bottle of liquid last a VERY long time, and it works well.

Wow - that website for making your own soap...besides being badly organized and hard to read...It sounds like a PIA to make your own soap. Soap is cheap. Is it worth it?

Wow - that website for making your own soap...besides being badly organized and hard to read...It sounds like a PIA to make your own soap. Soap is cheap. Is it worth it? Well it depends. Are you aware that about 98% of what is out there that is called "soap" is actually detergent? Dove was the last major company to make a true soap bar, but even they gave up and went to a detergent formula a decade or so ago. These days true soap is being made only by small, artisan makers and DIY-ers. Folks that want to stay away from the soup vat of industrial chemicals that is contemporary "soap" think that making their own is worth it. YMMV.

What a great thread. I had forgotten about castile soap and did not know soaps today are detergents. I called my son who has psoriesis (sp?) and he said he was going to try it. The link was very informative. Thank you.

Well, it is either detergent or mostly detergent with a little olive oil thrown in. Read the label carefully. Go to the Environmental Working Group's "Skin Deep" website and read about the ingredients listed on the bar or jar. That should help you make up your mind. www.ewg.org/skindeep/

Interesting on the not soap aspects of "soap" now. Even Dove has sold me out. At least one of them still works for me. Now I'm going to have to check out Castille soap. Thanks for the added research Never heard of the kiss my face soaps, but I use the oil cleansing method on my face and it likes it. www.crunchybetty.com/nitty-gritty-on-the-oil-cleansing-method. I do it when I shower, which is every other day because my skin can't take having a daily one. Too drying.

What a great thread. I had forgotten about castile soap and did not know soaps today are detergents. I called my son who has psoriesis (sp?) and he said he was going to try it. The link was very informative. Thank you. There is some really "interesting" marketing going on, lduttinger. Next time you're in a store, look carefully at the "soap" bars, squeeze bottles and pump jars. Take the time to notice that none of them say "soap." They all say "beauty bar," "cleansing bar," body wash" etc. These things cannot be labeled Soap unless they are made with soap ingredients (animal or vegetable fat, wood ash, etc). Yeah, you are NOT cleaning your body with soap, (unfortunately, sez me, JMHO) you are cleaning it with industrial chemical detergents. But having said that, I respect that everyone has to find something that works for them and shouldn't be called out for their educated choice. It's just important to be aware of the choice you're making. Many/most folks don't know about the chemicals being used in these products, and frankly probably some don't care. And also - many manufacturers are not eager for you to know for fear you will turn away from their product. We get enticed by the packaging, labeling, beauty promises, marketing hype etc. and don't often realize exactly what it is we're putting on our skin (that's also absorbing into our bodies).

Thanks oped. Will checkout that website. CL, where do you get the organic oils? On Amazon or somewhere else - thanks I started out thinking it probably wouldn't work so I started with what I had in the house, which was olive oil and vitamin E oil, that upon closer look wasn't organic/pure. I just bought castor oil at the drug store. Once I use up the E, because I'm just that way- can't throw it out, I'll have to search out my ingredients. I have a local health food store so I'll probably start there to avoid shipping fees if I can. Even with it being not so organic, my face has really liked it. I have only had 2 actual pimples and about the same amount of "threats" (the beginnings but never breaking through, could just feel it bump a little bit). My skin has always been oily and it's not producing so much oil during the day anymore. And the skin under my eyes feel a little less thin.

Hey saveinla! I just went and checked out the skin deep website for Kiss My Face olive oil soap, and on a scale of 0 (no harmful ingredients) to 8 (contains toxic ingredients), you soap scored a "0." Yay!

Got it thanks. I will probably do the same at first - I have a small bottle of castor oil and Vitamin E and will use them up before I venture further.

Yay! Thanks kittensaver. I am going to just start small with a bar at the drugstore and see how it goes. My skin is very sensitive and I am cautious of using new products even though they may be safe.

I'm sorry but I've never heard of Castile soap & that's why I checked out this thread. Then I got to reading & it suddenly hit me that "soap" just might be the perfect example to give if your trying to define to someone the difference between men & women. If another guy asked me about the soap that I use this would be the exchange: Him: Hey I'm changing soaps because my doctor told me to. What soap do you use? Me: Don't know. Him: How did you pick it. Me: Smelled good. Him: Use it long? Me: Bought a 10 or 12 pack & have a couple left. Him: Is it good? Me: It's soap. Him: What's it smell like? Me: Don't know but it smells ok. Him: Ok. Understand that the above conversation is drawn out simply because I didn't want to check how to spell grunt noises. The whole thing would have taken between 15 & 20 seconds. Before you comment about my post (If you feel the need to give examples of why I'm wrong) let me say that I'm not make fun here nor saying that soap isn't important. I'm really not even trying to imply anything. It just hit me that here's a thread with 23 posts about soap & here I am (a fairly old guy) & in my whole life I have never had a single conversation with another guy about soap. I've never even heard 2 other guys talking about soap. To most (not all of course) guys soap is just.....................................well soap.

Even the Ivory "soap" bars no long say 99.44% pure SOAP...they say 99.44% "pure clean & simple"! Not a word about soap, but it does contain tallow....several kinds.

One of the strange trivia facts floating around in my head is how Ivory soap was invested. It was a regular soap (that didn't float) until someone at the factory forgot to turn off the stir machine overnight. The next day the soap was made into bars & shipped like normal. Before long they were getting requests for that "floating" soap at the company. They figured out what people were talking about & change they way they did it. The fact that it floats is because of extra air beat into the soap. Knowing stuff like that is I guess a good example of how much free time I have on my hands (or maybe a bad example).
