I am not talking about good and productive things like paying off debt and saving, I am talking about nonsense things.. I started looking at other people's shopping carts. I didn't realize I was doing it until recently when I caught myself counting how many bottles of soda the woman in front of me had. Before, I was too busy reading trashy magazines while waiting in line... What about you? Did you pick up any stupid activities like this?

Hating myself because I realized I am a rotten excuse for a human being. I found myself counting someone's kids at the mall and then wondering how they support them all. Appearance wise my mind leapt to welfare. For which I felt horrible guilty, they might be millionare next door types for all I know.

Less tolerance for repeated stupidity. Everyone gets a free pass for making a major financial mistake. But if you don't learn from it and change your behavior than I have no more sympathy.
Things don't just keep "happening" and you're not "unlucky".

Ironically, I actually have more sympathy for people living on social services. Not because of YM, but because my job has changed and I have daily interaction with these people and the services that assist them with utilities and other bills. I see some repeats and some abusers, but what I've realized is these are the extreme minority (less than 5% according to the agency's stats), and most people really just do need a one-time hand to get going again. Over 90% of the customers we had apply for assistance were first-time applicants. Really challenges the stereotype.

Keep my mouth shut and try not to widen my eyes too much when people discuss their car payments. I recently heard a story of a *7* year loan and he had no idea of his interest rate.

I'm more quick to think - "how can you afford that?" or "You can't afford that" when people talk about certain activities. For example, a woman who is currently living rent-free, but knows she's going to have to move out soon and says she can't afford rent, but she can go on mini-vacations and to concerts among other things. Thankfully, I don't actually say these things out loud.

I added % of net and % of gross columns to my budget spreadsheet, so I could compare the percentages that I spend or save in different categories to the threads in this forum. *blushes*

Whenever I see someone using a wheelchair, I run up and demand they show me their doctor's note. If they don't have one, I them out and return their wheelchair to the service desk. Kidding, kidding. I did manage to keep a straight face when a relative told me she'd cashed out her 401(k) to pay for her kid's college. That's progress, right?

I have started considering keeping my car until its 40 years old and has a million miles on it so I can put all the money I normally spend on new cars every 3 years into S&P500 so I can become a zillionaire. I'm being serious, the thought of becoming a zillionaire might actually reform me! Problem I am having is that the 450 potholes I hit on my way to and from work everyday are making keeping my car forever difficult . Trying really hard to be a good ym-er Oh, I also phil script everyone when they talk about spending money on something I consider silly.

redkitty - if you were a good YM-er you would get a bike to ride. No fuel costs and you can more easily navigate those potholes.

I calculate the car to income ratio of everyone who has a nicer car than I do (which is quickly growing to be just about everyone.) A senior VP who is driving a Honda - okay. An admin in a Lexus - heeeyyyyy....

I knew there had to be something I wasn't doing right! The bike better come with a very cushioned seat for the 20 mile ride each way! (Now I have the song from Wizard of Oz when the witch was riding her bike stuck in my head)

The admin obviously has a Phil button and knows how to invest. The executive is going to end up with crab legs in his purse. Sad.

There's a tank parked on top of that Civic.).

I now judge everybody in an SUV and all new cars and think they can't afford that vehicle.

I see other people with nice (i.e. expensive) things and the first thing that comes to mind is, "I hope you can afford that." The next thought is, "I hope that's paid for." The third thought is, "I hope that you really like it and that you didn't get that at the expense of something more important."
Basically, I wince every time I see something, anything, that costs a lot of money. All I can think of is how much pain could be involved.
Less envy is probably good. On the other hand, my ambition and shopping skills have taken a hit.

On the good side, I now save money monthly for expenses that aren't a surprise but that always seem to catch me by surprise like Christmas and car insurance!

I wonder what the parking garage upcharge would be They charge about $10 more per day for an SUV....do u think the abrams qualifies as an SUV?

I'm even more judgmental than I was pre-YM, and quite honestly one would not have thought such a thing was possible!!
And I too giggle at the sight of crab legs! Though I really never see anyone with them at my grocery store. Does this mean rich people don't shop at my grocery store? Or that poor people don't shop there? Am I the poor person at my grocery store??

Am I the only one intimidated by the thought of preparing crab legs and making a huge mess out of the kitchen? I would much rather buy the lump meat in a can or the fake stuff in a pouch.

Spray paint the word "compact" on it and demand a discount I know some carbon-conscious folks who would interpret that as a command, and do so. The folks at the city impound lot might read it the same way. Prolly best to be careful where you park such a vehicle.
