How good would you rate yourself with technology? I'm referring to all manner of techno gizmos.
I'm better with some technology than others. I'm probably below average on mobile devices and anything put out by apple. I didn't get a cell phone until I graduated college and didn't get a smart phone until 2011. Even then, I still only use a cell phone as a cell phone for the most part, but I check e-mail on it. I've never even touched and Ipad. But on these devices I can usually muddle along and figure it out eventually.
I'm probably above average, but certainly not professional, in your typical desktop/laptop with windows 7 or older. I can maintain my computers myself, and solve any problems that seem to come up, and do whatever I need to do. I know how a desktop works and can identify the parts and do part replacement. I'm decent with microsoft office products.
As a sort of aside, I've never used facebook or twitter or myspace or anything like that. I'm not sure if I'd call those "technology" since they're more about social acumen than technology, but whatever, we can throw that in there too.

As far as using technology, I'd say I'm above average - we have a mix of Apple/Windows products at home and work so I get exposure to both. I have a pretty high level of functionality with Microsoft Office, Westlaw, our proprietary website-editing software, and everything else I use on a regular basis. Really, spending 8+ hours a day in front of a computer should ensure that I am at least average with technology... if not, there is something very wrong ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/tongue.png) OTOH, if something can't be fixed by turning it off and turning it back on, I'm lost.

Anything that has to do with Windows 7 and below I'm above average. Cisco gear, most haven't heard about, I'm above average as well. Anything that has to do with Mac,I'd say I get by on just pushing buttons. We have maybe 5 macs in our school, and 4 of them are located in the library. I don't use them often.

It's just I'm old enough to remember when Apple was a running joke and was hanging on by a thread in the 90's. I remember watching forest gump in high school in the early 2000's and someone making a joke about Forest investing in apple wasn't a good move at the time. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/tongue.png) I can get by using apple products and mobile devices, but certainly not elegently or quickly. Since I just got an Iphone 4 for work, I'll probably get better as time goes on.

I don't have anything apple and I don't have a smart phone, I barely understand my cell phone. I'd say I've pretty much got a failing grade on those technologies.
I'm behind the curve with everything TV related. I have a DVD/VCR player in the family room that I haven't been able to watch anything on since that TV conversion and the cable guy had to come and set up some box to the TV.
The only thing I do well with is the computer programs I need for work and home.

Certified Luddite. I remember using an IBM 026 card punch machine to write COBOL and Fortran code. And loading programs from paper tape. I remember using Visicalc on an IBM PC, and later, Lotus on a Compaq luggable. And the Wang word processor, and floppy discs before they went high density. And big hard drives that would store 10MB of data.
I remember $20K desktop PC's (first release of IBM AT), dot matrix printers, and green bar paper. I used HPMail before most people could spell email. But, no smart phone, no Tivo, no ipod, and I don't know how to text.
Damn I'm old.

I use computers every day at work. I can operate the cable/DVR. I programmed my NOOK to be able ot check out books from the library. I'd say I am average. However it took me forever to figure out how to use my new cell phone and it isn't even a smart phone. Gwen figured it out faster than me. ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/shucks2.png) I'm pretty decent at figuring out PCs but I haven't touched an Apple product since I left college. They had several Apple desktops available, I didn't like them very much.

I had forgotten about green bar paper. I used to get reports on green bar paper every morning. It was huge. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/grin.png)

Damn I'm old. You're old? I also remember COBOL and Fortran. I used Veronica and Archie before the first web browser (Mosiac) was invented. I bought my kids an Atari800 when they came out (early 80's) because I believed that computers would change the way we all did things and I wanted them to be comfortable with them... I was using email in 1993. ..I'm OLD!But I have, use, and love my iphone. Since getting it, DH and I text more than we talk over the phone. I have (and use) a Tivo and still use my ipod Touch. Since buying an iMac about three years ago, I've had to learn to use new apps (Pages & Numbers instead of Word and Excel). I think that, for an old lady, I'm fairly technologically competent.

I've never done TIVO. Never bothered to figure out the advanced TV features either, but that's more to do with the fact that I'm not big into TV than my technological competence. I do sometimes watch netflix though, so I'm at least in the 21st century there.

I think I'm pretty average. I can usually do anything I need with my PC or laptop, but just recently figured out how to take pictures with my phone (with the help of my DSD and DGS). I do text quite a bit.
I'm really old too! I remember working on IBM Selectric typewriters, then going to a Mag Card Reader/Writer to do proposals in the '70's. Bought my son an early computer (can't remember which one) because some of his friends had them and they'd all get together to write programs and make up games. Those were some smart kids back in the old days ('80's)!

Damn I'm old. This makes me feel much better; I can spell "technologically savvy"! I do know how to text, but for everything else, I'm really much more comfortable with stuff that's coal- or wood-fired. Life was easier when we had monks in the cellar with quill pens.
