Why not just turn on Private Browsing, steve? I don't know about the thumb drive and Linux, but you should be able to use Private Browsing to accomplish your purpose since information isn't saved in that mode unless you choose to save something to the computer rather than to an external device.

portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portableFirefox Portable is what you're looking for, steve. Just put that program on your flash drive, and surf the internet from that. The site also has Chrome if you prefer that, and a lot of other portable apps, too. edit: Crap, sorry. That's Windows, only.
