So, is anyone out here holding any of the 3D printing hardware companies? Or , are you playing the software angle?

I would look into both. 3-D printing of biological (skin, organs, etc.) shows huge promise. 3-D printing of high capacity magazines and gun parts, well we'll have to wait and see on that one.
The Government will step in at some point and either outlaw such activities or figure out a way to make money on them.

Biological printing will be huge Sun, world changing really. Personally I think the consumer market is still about 10 yrs off, price for one, but the other is that there is tech that is patented that will hold back the finished product. Even then I'm still not convinced that 3d printers will be in every home, you have to remember that you have to have a 3d printer as big as the items are that you want to produce. As for commercial, again, world changing. 3d printing will and is a huge part of the American Renaissance, JMO, you really want to focus on companies that are making money in the commercial and biological space.

I'm thinking about the software end. Something they all need. Autodesk is the front runner but the stock is up big over the last year with a hefty multiple.

The thing with software is, right now anyway, because we are in the start up phase of this revolution there could still be some big players that get in on that end, what you think?.. I'm thinking IBM? They do have Watson working on things..

A 3-D printed "working" gun? I wonder if the NRA is smiling? Maybe the government will require background checks for 3-D printer owners/buyers.

I bought some of the DDD when it split for a little over $30 a share and yesterday it was at $70 + . No way of knowing what the future holds but it sure seems better than Facebook and Twitter to me.

Up over another $4 this morning - Wow - Maybe it will split again soon - PE is smothing like 115% but sales growth was 53%. Maybe I'll get a break for once and keep riding this to retirement !

So much more than people realize - Just think when a Dentist needs a crown , Bridge , or implant they will be able to print one out right there in the office. No more sending it out to labs. It will reduce costs ( No more Temporarys) and no more repeat visits.
There are so many possiblities for these printers it is unreal. And there are Rumors of Stock Buyouts from Major players like IBM.

Hey dome! Long time no speak! Figured out how I'm going to play 3D printing. It's going to be a huge part of the American Renaissance, industry wise. Big companies that realize this are on my list, so are the people that make the material for the printed objects. I'm going to avoid companies that are really focused on the consumer end for now. I'm still not convinced that it's going to get past a niche consumer product. The first consumer 3D printers that print metal just hit the market for $750, and you need a kiln to finish them off. Regular printers that print professional quality photos and greeting cards are still $100 and up. There are still also greeting card stores, photo centers, and greeting card isles in stores. Millions of bread makers are sold every year and there is still bread and bakeries everywhere. Companies that are making a killing could, continue to do so. I'm a conservative, boring, investor and that's how I feel most comfortable playing this space.
Hope things have been well with you as well Q.

Hey Q. How's things in the NW suburbs? Aham-I play the DDD because of their integration of hardware and software. They have a working relationship with Soliworks which was basically developed to solid model shapes to convert to machining programs. Plus they are big on the industrial side for much larger printers. Think automotive. How do you think the new Corvette was developed. Plus on the medical side they have been ground breakers in creation of not only instruments but body parts such as bone and joint replacement. Now I know there are several other companies out there so I don't know how long before DDD runs its course but for now they are one hot entity.

I believe you made the right choice - They will eventually be bought out by other comapnies (More than likely) There are rumors that HP is interested in DDD. We will see how it plays out.

Carbon fiber hood, light, and very few pieces. There's a good video on YouTube. We should have bought DDD when we were talking about it in 2010, we would have been up like 800% plus a split. Even then you were saying I was behind in where the tech was at and I believed ya because I know you have first hand knowledge. That's where my issue with DDD is. They have been around since 89, which is a good thing, but all of there stock appreciation has come since the hype of a 3d in every home has hit the interwebs. I'm not buying it, I think small custom manufacturing is going to make a huge come back because of 3d printing and there are small startups all over poping up that prove that. I probably will pick up DDD at some point, but I think I might wait until the industry emerges a bit. Thoughts?

Earnings from DDD today... Ouch, I will point to the post above... Thoughts? From CES this year; we are about 5-7 years away from having a 3d printer for under $300 that will make officially licensed toys...
