I'm needing some moral support here. I'm two days late, took a pregnancy test this morning and it was negative. I was really hopeful because we've been trying for over a year, our doctor says we should be able to get pregnant on our own, and I am NEVER late. Early, yes, but never late.
So have any of you had a negative test after you were late, but then turned out to still be pregnant?

I did. I think the test was old, because I happened to have it in my drawer. But, I took the pregnancy test because I was going to my college homecoming and knew we would see friends. It was negative, so I drank like sailor on shore leave. 5 days later - still no period. Another pregnancy test, and sure enough - positive.
But again, I think my test was old and that is why I got a false negative.

You can call your doc to go in for a blood test to know for sure. I did that when I was 1 week late. The time I wasn't pregnant my insurance wouldn't pay for the test and I had a $248 bill.
Good luck! Join us on the kid thread if you'd like. Just jump in-we're pretty mellow most days.

The tests are pretty sensitive but you would have to be more than a few days pregnant. I think it is at least one to two weeks along type of thing. You can get a blood test but it is expensive so you might as well just wait another week or so and see. Good luck.

How late are you? Not every woman has the same amount of hormones in her urine, especially during the early weeks. So just because the test says "Can predict pregnancy 4 days after your missed period" does not mean that YOU, specfically have enough hormone being excreted out to detect it that early.
Going by the date of my last period I was 8 weeks along when I tested. 6-8 weeks along is a good amount of time and you should definetly see a line by then if you are pregnant..
Make sure you test first thing in the morning. You're urine is the most concentrated first thing in the morning so you're more likely to see a line if you test then.

Thanks for the replies.
False alarm, I am definitely not pregnant. Such a disappointment. Anyone have any good fertility book recommendations?

I will definitely check that out, thanks! I feel like maybe if I stretch myself to the brink financially, to a point where I won't be able to afford child care if I were to get pregnant, then maybe I will be tempting fate and it will happen?

Only if driving yourself to the brink means carrying a coach purse, getting your nails done, eating crab legs and driving a raised Escalade. According to YM you should be able to pop out babies in no time!

If you have been trying for a year, get a referral (or just go, depending on your insurance) to a reproductive endochronologist. Did your doc do a bunch of tests to ensure you are both fertile, etc.? If you should be able to get pregnant, but aren't, the year is the typical time frame most docs say before escalating. Good luck!

I used those ovulation tests when i wanted to have our third child. That worked great and i have a lovely DD to show for it. I've used those tests. My doctor actually recommended against them because he said it puts too much pressure to have sex on a particular day, when you should just be doing it regularly. I'm not sure I buy that. Maybe I'll start up again. We did go to a reproductive specialist. I had numerous blood tests done at different times during the month, an ultrasound, and that test where the shoot the dye into your uterus. DH was tested as well. We went after 10 months of trying because DH is 35 and I am 32. The doctor said that we weren't as likely as a completely fertile couple to get pregnant each month, but that he thought we would be able to conceive on our own (there are a few minor issues). He told us to try for 10 more months, then come back if we wanted to try other methods. We are 5 months into the additional 10 months.

I definitely found the OPKs very helpful. If nothing else, they really help in terms of charting your cycle, especially if it's not particularly regular. (Mine varies from 29-33 days in length, usually on the longer side.) For me, the expense was well worth avoiding the hassle of taking my temperature all the time. (I think I charted basal body temp for a whopping three days before I was like "forget this")
After trying for a long time, DH and I finally got pregnant on the 4th cycle of Clomid, and the 2nd month after I had an HSG. It took us 21 months total to conceive. I'm 34 and DH was 35 at the time of conception.
Can you switch doctors if your current one isn't treating aggressively enough for your tastes?
Good luck!!!

So, awkward question. When you got the positive result on the OPK, when did you have sex? That day? The next?
I seem to be ovulating every month, and my cycles are very regular. Does clomid help with that?
I have considered going to a different doctor. I had a friend who had a recommendation, I may have to check that out.
ETA - That is, my cycles have been regular until this month.

It has been awhile. Check out the directions. I believe that it tells you when you are actively ovulating with a couple of days so obviously, that is time.

What we did was have sex every other day until we got a + OPK, then every day for 4 days in a row. That way we didn't miss the opportunity. The OPK is testing for a surge in the LH hormone, which indicates ovulation will occur sometime in the next 24-48 hours. Clomid induces ovulation, same as Femera. So if you are ovulating then you probably wouldn't need either of those.

I was ovulating, but Clomid up'd our chances and it worked. I was told to test for the surge in the afternoon, once I got that I had to go to the clinic the next morning for ultrasound (to make sure an egg would or had been released), and then iui.
I would check out a different doctor..

Did you know you can just get Clomid online?? I would NOT recommend it, as it can have serious side effects, but I was amazed that it is apparently really easy to get. And crazy cheap too. There were several people on BBC that decided to treat themselves and got it online. ourmeds.org/products/women_s_health/clomid/order/?cid=clomid25mg

TREAT THEMSELVES? TO CLOMID?!?!?!?! Clomid was the worst side effects of any medication I've ever taken - NO WAY would I take that without a Dr's say-so.

I think it's from the US (?). Only way I would order that is if it was prescribed and insurance wouldn't cover it. I can't believe people were just taking it without Dr supervision or knowledge!!!

I did get my clomid (and HSG trigger) from an internet formulary because my insurance wouldn't cover it, so we had to pay cash. It was located in New Hampshire or something, I think. But I had to have a prescription from a Dr, and Dr ok to use the formulary. I couldn't just order it willy-nilly.

Mine was early April 1967 in an emergency room. I didn't know they were doing one when I saw the test on the desk and told them I couldn't be pregnant but they said I was. I got a couple of transfusions and a D&C they called a threatened abortion because I had probably already lost the fetus.

I didn't know that crone. Sorry to hear.
Just fyi, they call any lost pregnancy an abortion. A miscarriage is a spontaneous abortion. It's hard for some people to see that terminology....

Oped: They are finally getting away from the abortion word when dealing with m/c's. I had a missed m/c last year and it was termed an incomplete pregnancy...so much easier than seeing that ichy "A" word when you wanted the baby so much. But two years ago they were using the "A" word. Our insurance is now calling m/c and other losses incomplete pregnancies also. It is such a better term emotionally.
