Since the mean number of fingers is less than 10, and most accountants would have 10, yes, that's true. (or 8 if you count as 8 fingers and 2 thumbs).

Based on the random and bizarre threads he starts, the self-sustaining lifestyle must leave Steve with lots of excess time on his hands...

Not "most people." At least, that wasn't how it was marketed.

Is there a reason you delete so many of your posts? He tries to make a funny joke, no one laughs, delete post. Or in this case, tries to ask a funny question, gets a serious answer that negates the punchline, deletes post.

He tries to make a funny joke, no one laughs, delete post. Or in this case, tries to ask a funny question, gets a serious answer that negates the punchline, deletes post. I thought it was a fun interesting riddle. Apparently Hoops knew the answer and wanted others to know also, so he "negated the punchline" by answering. What fun, huh? Isn't the entire point of a riddle to answer it? Irrelevant since what you posted was not a riddle though. Can you decide where you'd prefer to do your whining though? It's more difficult to keep up when you're whining on the thread and also in my PM box. Also harder to keep up with when you post, then go back and totally remove that post and change it to something else entirely. Thanks

the first post was about how most people have more then the average number of fingers. I'd never thought of it that way. Although it is an interesting factoid. Here's another marvel to consider: Google NoseNote the date, however. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/wink.png)

As I understand it... Amputations and birth defects account for most people with less than 8 fingers, 2 thumbs. I'm guessing any with more than 10 suffer from some kind of birth defect. Counting up all those pluses & minuses, leaves the mean number of ~8.

The OP was originally actually about whether or not accountants specifically had more than the average number of fingers.

By the way, now I am curious about the average number of fingers and why some people have more.. Suppose 99.99% of people have 10 fingers (thumbs included) and 0.01% have fewer than ten fingers. The average (mean) number of fingers is going to wind up being some fractional value in the interval [9.999 10). Ergo, the 99.99% of people with 10 fingers will have more fingers than the average. If it turned out that a significant number of people had more than 10 fingers, the statement might swing the other way, but as Rocky Mtn points out, extra digits are far rarer than missing digits.

some people have extra fingers. Also, you have to round the numbers at some point. Or are you going to take it out to 15 decimal points?

Most people have more fingers then average because most people have more hands then average. Its not complicated. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/wink.png) You just blew my mind.

some people have extra fingers. Also, you have to round the numbers at some point. Or are you going to take it out to 15 decimal points? You don't, as long as we either count each digit as a whole finger or not a finger (i.e. no "partial" fingers). In such a case, the average number of fingers is: the total number of fingers on all living human beings -divided by- the total number of living human beings. That is, the ratio of two whole numbers, X/Y, where we know that X >= 0 and Y >= 1. Suppose we're given the number of fingers on Archie's hand: A. To determine if Archie has more than the average number of fingers, we evaluate the expression A > X/Y. But since Y >= 1, this is equivalent to asking if AY > X. Since A, Y, and X are all whole numbers, the inequality can be determined exactly without any rounding error. Specifically, we can say that if AY > X, Archie has more than the average number of fingers if AY = X, Archie has exactly the average number of fingers if AY < X, Archie has fewer than the average number of fingers No rounding or truncation required whatsoever.

Huh? In accounting we call that immaterial and it becomes part of the rounding error.

Huh? In accounting we call that immaterial and it becomes part of the rounding error. If rounding error was a big enough deal, you could easily set up accounting problems to work in rational integer spaces with infinite precision. For example, any symbolic toolbox will happily tell you what the exact value of 1.035 40 is, accurate to any number of digits. In fact, I happened to have my Maple kernel open, plugged it in, and got the fraction 435325210081455054579329070111691676372738961348785547377423970258372212188198298291141168001 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 109951162777600000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 As for why accountants use 3.96 rather than the above expression, I'll give you one guess. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/tongue.png)

The first guy wants a drink but doesn't know if the other guys do. If he didn't want a drink he would have said no, not everyone wants a drink. Same with the second guy. Since both guys before didn't say no before the last guy, and he wanted a drink too, he was able to say yes.
