I'm not joking. When he went for his annual physical, the dr noted that a lump on his collar bone had doubled in size from the previous year. She scheduled him for a CT scan. The scan showed nothing, so she sent him to an ENT for a needle biopsy. The biopsy showed cancer cells, but the sample was too small to identify the type of cancer. A PET scan was ordered (the cost of the PET scan alone was nearly $7500!). We waited 3 days for the PET scan (wondering if we would be told that he had multiple tumors). The PET scan showed no other activity than the lump. He is now scheduled to have the lump removed (under general anesthesia because the ENT wants to do some exploratory scoping and will likely remove one or two lymph nodes). That is scheduled for next Monday.
In addition, we found out that he in in the early stage of prostate cancer. The urologist said treatment can wait - that the collar bone lump is the priority right now.
The last ten days have not been a lot of fun. I just needed to get that out there. I'm spacey and distracted.

Sending prayers your way, GG! ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/wilted.png) Glad to hear they're tackling the lump on his collar bone first. A man can live for years with prostate cancer. My Dad did.

Sorry GG. Praying removing the lump will be enough and everything else goes well. Think positive thoughts. Tenn, even tried to send God to help with treatment. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/grin.png) (It wasn't a typo although he forgot to capitalize...)

A man can live for years with prostate cancer. That is almost word for word what his urologist said. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/smiley.png) Thank you all. There are some positive (well, hopeful) things. The ENT said whatever it is, it appears to be "very early". We have an excellent hospital and staff (Virginia Mason, Seattle) and pretty decent healthcare. DH is too young for Medicare (he's only 64); his plan is not a cadilac plan but has a pretty low OOP max ($3000). And no annual or lifetime max. Now if I can just stop looking up symptoms of lymphoma, throat cancer, thyroid cancer......

Sometimes knowing too much too early does not help!!! I told my onco doc years ago :anything I want to know I will ask. Funny, didn't want to know much as my imagination can take care of things for me. Best advice for now, stay off those internet sites.
When I had my knee replaced last year, the surgeon would come in at 6 AM....ask if I had any questions, my answer was always Nope....not a one. Sure could use another cup of coffee though.
Sent you a PM also.

So sorry to hear ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/wilted.png) It is however very good news that it sounds like it hasn't metastasized yet, that it's all in the one lump. I would absolutely set aside worrying about the prostate cancer for now as well--something crazy like 80% of men over 70 have some form of prostate cancer, and most of them eventually die of something totally unrelated. Too, the number specifically of new and experimental prostate cancer treatments available has exploded in the past few years. Wishing your DH a speedy and full recovery.

I am also so glad to hear that you have good insurance and that this was caught early.

Sounds like you have some great doctors that are on top of things. Keep us posted. We do have some great doctors. Yesterday we had already set up an apt with the urologist to discuss options for the prostrate cancer. I had picked up a CD of the PET scan (the lab said they could not get it to Seattle the same day) and hand carried it to the urologist. The urologist got us in to see the ENT right away - no appointment; he worked us in. And we did not wait that long. It is a 2 hr trip each way, so that saved us an additional trip. They will keep him overnight Monday. I've booked the kennel for the pooches and booked myself a room across the street from the hosp, so I can just stay with him and bring him home Tues. Hopefully we will then know what we are dealing with and start talking about a plan for treatment. One thing I did right away was download and print a release form for DH to sign. I emailed it to the medical records dept and they have added it to his records. That means I can call his doctors on his behalf and get my questions answered.
