Every year, it gets less and less simple for me and I lead an utterly simple life! :-)
So this year, I went to the website I used last year (to computer-file both federal and state.) Their computer program has you finish filing federal before you ever start state. Imagine my surprise to discover this year they do not support my state.
Sigh... So I go to my state gov website where there are links to e-filing companies with unprofessional names (which don't inspire confidence.)
The second company again makes me start with federal. I hung in for awhile hoping I could then do state only, but realized it was going to force me to file federal first so I left the site midstream so to speak.
The third company left me teetering on the edge till the very end at which point they had an option to print out and mail instead of electronically file-thus allowing me to skip double filing of federal, and simply mail in my state. But I live in fear I have double e-filed Federal lol.
Why can't they simplify this process we all have to go thru?

Don't worry about "double" filing the federal return. The IRS computer checks the SSN to make sure only one return has been filed and will reject the second return.

Does your state offer any filing direct through their Dept of Revenue? CO has a nifty free site on their official website, where you can file the state form for free. You use the info on the completed 1040 and fill in some boxes specific to the state. It took me 10 minutes this year and saves me from paying TurboTax $25.

My state has a pretty simple tax form if you don't own a business, so I usually e-file use the one through my state as well (PA). I do fill it out in turbotax first, but really that is only because TT fills out the state form as you are going along with the federal form, and doesn't ask you if you want the state one until the very end. I usually use it as a check for when I fill out the form online. It usually takes less than 20 minutes, and that is only because it takes some time to actually log in, fill out the boxes, and flip between a few screens.
