They have multiple pick up men's basketball leagues at the Y. Why is it so hard to get a group of women together to play basketball? We had a small league going for awhile but some of the gals got pregnant and of course had to leave. But, trying to start another with no luck. i know LOTS of you gals played Bball in HS and loved it the way i do! I just want to play once a week or even once a month! I love to play! Come on ladies! I know a lot of you were very good athletes! What happened to the fire inside to play?

I'll tell you what happened to me, kids and work and volunteer projects. I used to play softball and golf leagues. I don't have time anymore. I'd love to play again. Or hockey, or soccer, or volleyball, or basketball.

I never got into basketball (it took me FOREVER to figure out how to do a layup). I would gladly join any other sports league, though.

Maybe you should allow crying in your league.

Well, heck how about softball? I would do that or volleyball! Anything! The ladies around here are lame when it comes to sports. And, i live in a small town so there isn't much other opportunities to get my sports fix.

Shooby, do you use social media to get the word out? There are lots of platforms that you could post to to get people together.

Starting anything is difficult, especially something where you need 32 people plus facilities. If you really want to start a league, you need to be really aggressive about finding people that want to be part of it. You say you are in a small town, so how many people do you have to draw from? And how many are women? And what percentage of women actually did play sports earlier in life? Your pool might get small, quickly. But, if you can find those 32 women, make 4 teams and get a field - you might have a great time.
Maybe instead of starting a league, you could just have a tournament, and make it one weekend, with just 4 games for each team. Every team plays every team, and then the top two teams play for grand winner. This limits the time committment and you can see how everyone likes it. Then you can get a roster going.
Do you know 3 other people that would be interested? If so, task each of them to beat the street to find 7 other people to make a team.

I am not trying to even start a league. I would just like a group of about 8 to 10 women who want to get together once a month or twice a month to play a full court game of basketball for about an hour. As i said, we had a nice group of ladies and we played every Sat morning for quite awhile and then it fell apart which i understand but now i would like to start up a new group.

Start by calling those ladies and seeing who else misses it. Basketball is really easy - you can play with so few people.

I am going too. And, i am going to go to my hometown site on Facebook and put up a post there. Seems like a lot of women lose interest in sports after they are done with HS. I don't know why. I love playing.

You can see how I assumed you were trying to start a league, since your post is titled "Why is it So Hard to Start a Women's Bball League?"

Why is so hard to start a Women's Bball weekly game?
I don't know - you used the word League, I used the word League, and then you said 'Not a league.' So, if it isn't a league, why did you use the word league. Not my fault you said league, which implies a league, even though you don't want a league, just a recurring game. I'm sure there is some way to say recurring game without saying league, unless you really want to start a league, in which case, you should ask about starting a league.

In our town, the Y calls it a "Pick Up LEAGUE".

In our town, the Y calls it a "Pick Up LEAGUE". Sounds like an oxymoron to me.
