Don't get me wrong. I'm not upset. Just curious.
I tend to be a 'visual' person in many respects. I identify posters by their avatars. On a desktop or a mobile phone, I identify applications by their icons. I like political editorial cartoons, and have found on occasion that a single well-drawn cartoon can indeed be worth a thousand words.
Whenever I create a thread on NMSNM, I like to select a topic-appropriate icon to make it more traceable in the thread indexes.
But aside from SL, chiver, and Sugilite (who I believe uses icons simply to humour me), I notice that nobody actually assigns icons to their threads. Since it's one of those features that I consider nifty, I'm curious why people aren't using it.
Is the interface too clumsy? Is the selection too limited? Or does it simply not matter to you--is it just additional visual noise that clutters up the board?
Again, you won't offend me with your answers. I'm just curious about people's opinions.

Lately I only use the new thread link and look at what's current. The only time I go to a specific index or board is if I won't to tart a thread. I guess I just don't notice the icons on threads really, just look at names... ?

Is that what you're referring to with the 'new thread link'?

Yes, new topics. I guess I just don't notice them ? They are there, just dont stand out to me... And because I'mI'm only looking at a page usually, its not hard to skim... Sorry, just trying to give some feedback, although I'm sure it isn't very helpful...

I like all the newly added thread icons. And I try to find just the right one to use if and when I do start a new thread (I've also added some to previously-started threads like the help shelter animals and weather threads). I think it makes it much easier to spot specific topic or locate one of your favorite threads of interest.
And they add a bit more pizazz and originality to the board - it's not as "generic" as other forums.
(Have I mentioned how much I appreciate all the little tweaks you provide us with?

I didn't even know they were there. However, now that I've seen them, I probably won't be using them. I guess I'm not a visual person. I don't pay any attention to little pictures.

I don't use them because I can't even remember the last time I started a thread. But if I do start one, I'll definitely find one that is appropriate. I do like the one somebody added to the bad mood thread. Cute.

I don't really get the purpose of them. A smiley face or frown doesn't tell you what the thread is about?

The Bad Mood thread has a frowny face and nobody bitchfests in there.
So either I have to start bitching or change the frowny face.

I rarely start threads, and I'm not a visual person in the way you describe, virgil. I'm interested in content and pay little attention to icons and other visual clues. I think I did use an icon on the last thread I started, but I did it because I realize others enjoy them. It took a long time for me to use emoticons, to be honest. I found them superfluous, until I realized they could be used to enhance communication in a medium devoid of body language to facilitate understanding. Too many "piccys", especially if they move or flash, distracts me ... and that annoys me. Ima ol' stick-inna-mud!

If you want to see what's on the thread icon menu, just click on "Create Thread" in the top right corner of the section you're in (EE, MT, P&M, etc) then click the file icon next to where the thread title would go. You don't have to start a thread to see the icons that are available for you in case you do ever want to use one. There's various themes (like money, food, nature, smiley's, flags, family/home, etc).

Too many "piccys", especially if they move or flash, distracts me ... and that annoys me. Ima ol' stick-inna-mud! No I realize that the icons are just noise to some people. My mother is a good example. She hates icons. They don't encapsulate any real meaning for her. She especially hates two-state icons, like a folder that appears pinned if you click it once and unpinned if you click it again, because she can never keep track of whether the icon is displaying the current state of the folder or the state the folder will be in if you click the button. And in fairness, I have seen applications using both conventions. But for me, scanning a list of 40 threads for an icon might take a second; reading thread titles one at a time can take 5, 10, even 20 seconds, especially if the thread has dropped off the first page or I accidentally skip over the one I'm looking for.

I can see both views, Virgil. I'm a speed reader, and have always preferred words to pictures. It's why I don't enjoy TV or movies. It's why I quit RPGs when they trended from text-based to visual. Let's face it - I'm old, dammit! As a child, I loved the old radio programs. TV just never replaced those for me. Indeed, it ruined the experience of using my imagination to enter into the story being told.
I don't really hate icons, but I'm not enthused by them.

And that's why I read books more than I watch TV. I like to visualize the characters, surroundings & landscape in my mind as the story plays out in words. Many times when books I've read come out in movies, I'm sadly disappointed with the poetic license they've taken from the actual book - often leaving out critical detail.

Hey, people are willing to spend however many hundred dollars for Google Glass. This is a way to save yourself ten seconds without having to walk through life wearing a visor and talking to yourself.

They are lovely, Virgil, but I've not started any threads lately. Do you want me to go through my old ones and add them?

I use them on occasion--mostly on the old set up before the "participated" button. I have very limited time on here during the day, and I needed a quick way to see if there was anything new on a thread.
I'm sure it didn't get used often, but I miss the medieval hatchet one.

Lone, I had to play a bit to find it too. If you "create thread", there is a little folder on the right. Some cute/ fun ones there.

I mentioned the feature in the Board Upgrades thread, but I suppose I should have created an announcement to let people know it's there.
