I can't find a brainteaser thread. ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/melancholy.png) Is it on the new board?

Strange title - "Improved Flu Poll" - how is flu "improved" - does it get weaker or stronger? ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) what has been improved the poll (pole) it rests on. Flu viruses are continually modifying themselves...one needs a newer "improved" pole(poll) to display them on. Oh and if the flu flew and since people don't come with wings, a pole (poll) might be handy to be able to catch one?? ;D

I got the flu the year they "missed" and basically came out and said "Sorry, the vaccine won't work this year." I was pregnant, so I couldn't take any medications. All I really wanted was something that would put me to sleep. I have no problem taking an entire bottle of Nyquil over 3 or 4 days, and then waking up hung over, but at least the worst of it has passed. The worst part was every time I coughed, I peed a little. I went through so many pairs of underpants in a day.

I think I answered right... the last 5 years I've worked in public health I've gotten the flu shot. Only year I got flu was 2009 during H1N1, and I had it pretty mild. I did get the shot that year (both? I think there were 2? My memory is awful) Haven't had the flu in years otherwise.

Article in NY Times today about the flu this year: The country is in the grip of three emerging flu or flulike epidemics: an early start to the annual flu season with an unusually aggressive virus, a surge in a new type of norovirus, and the worst whooping cough outbreak in 60 years. And these are all developing amid the normal winter highs for the many viruses that cause symptoms on the “colds and flu” spectrum. Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston started asking visitors with even mild cold symptoms to wear masks and to avoid maternity wards. The hospital has treated 532 confirmed influenza patients this season and admitted 167, even more than it did by this date during the 2009-10 swine flu pandemic www.nytimes.com/2013/01/10/health/flu-widespread-leading-a-range-of-winters-ills.html?src=me&ref=general

Curious. People either seem to be unvaccinated or really, really vaccinated. And the responses thus far are bearing out the Gelian claim that flu is a big deal for most people.

I think it's a big deal in certain areas. in other areas it's almost non existant. this is why I don't believe it is an epidemic. Although if you lived in one of those areas where the flu runs rampant, it may seem like an epidemic.
Of course our media will play it up. There's how many people in the U.S. vs how many that have died so far as the sole case of the flu? (meaning they had no other physical problems and just the flu)

Are we related?
Allow me to explain . . . one year my uncle came to visit grandma while we were there. Grandma was complaining because she could not get her parakeet in its cage. My uncle waited for the bird to take flight and then swatted it with the fly swatter. I thought poor grandma was going to have a heart attack and cry. She did cry. He picked the bird up off the floor, placed the bird in the cage and told my grandma that is was no problem. yes, the bird lived.

It is an ever spreading epidemic. It may not reach all areas until later in the year. Sometimes, it is summer before it spreads coast to coast.

(CNN) -- The flu is spreading fiercely across the United States, with more than 40 states reporting widespread activity in what one of the nation's leading health officials is calling an epidemic. "If you look at the charts that the (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) put out on their website, it clearly has gone above that threshold. So we are into what would classically be described as a flu epidemic," Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health, told CNN's Wolf Blitzer on Thursday. "It's still on the uptick," Fauci added. The season has started earlier, and cases are more severe than last year, health officials say. The latest Centers for Disease Control and Prevention flu advisory report, which covers the week of December 23 to 29, suggests that 41 states have widespread influenza activity, which was an increase of 31 states from the previous week. The CDC will issue an update on the flu situation Friday. There have so far been 2,257 hospitalizations associated with laboratory-confirmed flu virus, the CDC report said. Among children, there have been 18 deaths reported during this season. Various state agencies also are compiling statistics on flu-related deaths. www.cnn.com/2013/01/09/health/us-flu-season/index.htmlI should get in touch with the CDC posthaste and tell them it's not an epidemic. Beags said so.

My gramma was one of those hospitalized for flu that turned into pneumonia. She spent over a week in the hospital before being released finally yesterday.

Thousands of Canadians celebrated the holiday season feeling a bit feverish, knocked off their feet by a strain of influenza that’s hurried across the country earlier than in years past. The latest edition of the Public Health Agency of Canada report said localized influenza activity, commonly known as the flu, was reported in 11 provinces and territories during the first week of December. According to Health Canada, there were around 3,500 cases of influenza in the country as of Dec. 15. By the same time in 2011, there were only 182 cases. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/story/2013/01/03/canada-health-flu-season-influenza.htmlThe above is only as of Dec 15th, almost a month ago. It's much worse now. Nah! What epidemic?

MONTREAL– Officials at Montreal’s Sacré Coeur Hospital said their emergency department was operating at over 250 per cent capacity on Thursday afternoon because of a huge influx of patients suffering from flu-like symptoms. The hospital has opened up other sections of the building to accommodate the emergency room cases, upping the total number of beds available for emergency patients. Officials say they are also collaborating with local CSSS facilities and Montreal’s public health authority to transfer some emergency patients back to their home neighbourhoods -- where they will receive the necessary care either in clinics or at home. A word of advice....if you feel like you've been hit by a truck, had a fever, and the fever goes away and comes back; get yourself seen. You probably have a secondary infection. That's when the REAL trouble starts.

I remember one year it was so bad the hospitals had nowhere to put anybody. Even the hallways had been filled to capacity with beds. The nearest emergency room that could take you was 2 hrs away. By November 23rd we were already declared to be in an epidemic. It is just getting worse.

In my area some hospitals are having to turn away some patients as the beds are filled. In my office (24 people on my floor) we have had 6 people who have taken one or more sick days this week. I'm in accounting and this is year end. You do not take off at this time of the year unless you are at death's door. However those that really don't feel well know it's better to work from home or come in on weekends rather than risk infecting the whole office (well except for one moron!!! ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/grrr.png) ). Since I'm working weekends as well it's all the same to me but I feel for the one pregnant lady who cannot afford to get sick right now.

"Severe" is a relative term. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) What is severe/almost died to a man are minor sniffles to a woman. Everyone knows that. I "woke" DH up last night and told him to come to bed. He was sleeping in a chair in the living room and his neck was at an awkward angle. He then got in bed and was moaning so bad I got up and went to sleep on the couch. Why does everyone have to know your not feeling well? When I am sick I just want to be left alone.

Beags said so. The real numbers are probably much higher since not everyone who comes down with the flu goes to the doctor. The hospital in town and the VA hospital (for the nursing home; we don't have inpatient beds) where I work have implemented visitor restrictions because of the flu.

Was it the flu starting or a reaction to the sinus med I took? I could feel my BP increase but my nose stopped running. When I got into bed I felt like early flu. Went to sleep and woke up in good health. I read my sinus med. and it has polyethylene glycol and polyvinyl alcohol. ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) OMG, I think the allergy med. is poison. It kicks up other reactions. Then I read on the box that it can cause symptoms of asthma or emphysema. Back on topic. My Gr.S has the flu and is in bed. He had no work this week so he decided to tough it out. Bottom line is, if you have single relatives with no live in or people doing regular face to face checks on them, now is the time to do that.

Bottom line is, if you have single relatives with no live in or people doing regular face to face checks on them, now is the time to do that. Ha! That brought back memories. The last time I had the flu was the March of 2006. My brother was a nurse and he would call me at least once a day to see how I was. I had a roommate who would stick her head in my bedroom door once or twice a day to make sure I was still breathing (sort of) and ask if she could get me anything. One day, I was finally able to get to sleep and actually sleep (instead of waking up constantly coughing). I didn't answer my phone when my brother called. He called my roommate. She called her boyfriend who worked closer to our apartment. Luckily it was his lunch hour, because he left work to come check on me.

I had once if my memory serves me correctly. Since I had a Flu shot, I was some what surprised getting them. But it was mild one...Maybe side affect from Flu shot. I am not really sure. ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/unwell.png)

I'd vote if I could make heads or tails of the "improved" options. I've had the flu. It was severe. Fever, felt like I'd been hit by a truck, vomiting, the whole 9 yards. No shot that year, and not really any shots since. Maybe one in the last 3 or 4 years? ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/idunno.gif) Give that option a vote from me Virgil. ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)

Actually Foodiedad, I can't win. If I don't wake him up he will complain that his neck is bothering him. See I noted his neck was at a ackward angle - if he had been asleep on the couch - I would have left him alone.
