I'm a value shopper- I like to pay the least amount I can for the best available product I want and can afford.
But the older I get the more I realize there's a lot of crap I buy out of habit that I just don't need. For example, every time I'm in a gas station, I buy some energy drink, bottle of water, or coffee.
I started this lousy habit in HIGH SCHOOL!!! for crying out loud because I walked to and from school (yes, it was up hill in the snow BOTH ways) and the 7/11 was kind of a hang out with video games, etc.
So, recently I became conscious of what I was doing and resolved to always pay at the pump and NOT go in and buy things I really don't need, that aren't that healthy, and are priced as high as any similar item could be priced.
I realized that I don't need these things when I started thinking about "saving money" on them by maybe seeing if I could find a case of something I liked at Costco or something- but then I realized, I don't REALLY like the stuff that much and I could save 100% (plus health benefits) if I just didn't buy it.
Anyone got any similar bad habits? Impulse buys at the check out lane, etc?

For me, I can get tripped on little purchases ... that add up. A lip gloss here. A chaptstick there. It's not that these items are outrageous, or that they break my budget ~ it's just that I already HAVE plenty of these, yet sometimes I am still tempted to buy new ones. I do this with flavored teas in the grocery store, too ... and now I have 8-10 open boxes of nifty flavored teas.

Food I don't like. I shop and see something I don't like but decide to buy some for my boyfriend because he likes it. Shrimp is a prime example I just plain don't want any ever but I know he would be happy if I got him some. I have never agreed to pay for his food and I refuse to charge him for things I pick out for him. Sometimes I just stop buying him treats or even bread and peanut butter.
When he runs out of bread or peanut butter he goes shopping and buys everything he likes. I don't eat his snacks so he has a big supply of chocolate chips, potato chips, dip, nuts and some food for the house like steak and butter.
I paid for all the food pretty much the first 20 years together because he doesn't shop. Let him shop and he can see how much it cost to keep him supplied with bread and peanut butter. I also tend to buy all his clothing as long as his socks and underwear just appear magically he doesn't shop. I go to Costco and somehow 16 pair of matching socks appear.

celt try to find a recipe for Eagle milk, jello and knocks gelatin
Take several colors of jello or just red and green and mix with less water. Mix the eagle milk and gelatin to make white.
Using a flat pan maybe a big Pyrex put in a layer of a color. Refrigerate until set. Add a white layer and refrigerate, then a color layer and refrigerate repeat until you have 4 or 6 color layers and 3-4 white layers then let it all set longer.
Cut into cubes and remove from pan laying them on the sides so they look like rainbows.
Serve to children and childish adults, they will peel the layers to eat them.
I will look for the actual recipe for you I don't remember it all but everyone likes it.

I asked husband last night for some grocery money. He gave me $50. LOL! Okayyyyy, this will last us for maybe a week..... They have no idea. We agreed when we started living together to split food cost but he shops expensive and I shop cheap and I couldn't do it. I rather pay 1.99 for something to share than see him spend 2.99 for the same item and me pay half. We saved as a couple but then he would just waste any money we saved from my shopping and it cost me more. Showing a little restraint is saving me a lot of money but costing him more. He shops at the most expensive store around and comes home with high priced stuff. He says he wants to save money for next summer so is spending less now. He isn't buying lobster and crab for new year's. I will probably surprise him with some but only if it is on sale, it is usually on sale I guess I shouldn't go in the store at all.

2011 is my year of restraint. I hope to learn some frugal tips from these boards. Some posts are very inspiring.

You'll learn frugal here for sure. You have to be careful, though or you'll find yourself stepping over dollars to pick up dimes (some people are too cheap).

Ha! I know what you mean. I've read some posts of very frugal people, who have a goal for 2011 to try and spend more! Not my problem...
