I thought it was a "no-brainer recipe" but made some for the guys at work yesterday and they really liked it. Put "one part" orange juice and "one part" vanilla ice cream (vanilla bean is the best, imo) in a blender. Blend until smooth. If it's too thick, or not enough orange flavor, add more juice. Tastes a lot like an orange julius

I used to make something similar for patients in the ICU who just didn't have much appetite. I'd mix vanilla ice cream, orange sherbet and milk. Kids and adults alike loved it.

Lonewolf, if a patient is not eating, and is sick enough to be in ICU, I don't care what they eat as long AS they eat. They've got to get nourishment. If they'll eat the "shakes", it's a darned sight better than being fed through needles in their arms. I can add protein powder to the shakes.
The elderly, little kids, those without teeth ... there are a lot of reasons why when a patient is in the hospital, the last thing you want to worry about is whether they're getting the "right" foods. They need to eat, for more reasons than one. You do what you can to get them to eat. This isn't long-term. This is for the time when they need encouragement and when a small thing like an orange shake can make their world.
In general, hospitals don't feed sweets and fats; however, there are times when those things should be an issue and times when they shouldn't. I've seen doctors write a low cholesterol, low fat, low salt diet for people in their 90s! Umm, excuse me, but that's just plain stupid. That person needs to eat. If you make their diet so strict they're not going to eat, you're not doing them any favors. If they haven't followed such a strict diet at home, they're not going to take to it because some doctor writes it in his orders, and they've obviously been doing something right since they've lived into their 90s! Sometimes, lonewolf, you have to put aside all the protocols and just follow your heart, and the wishes of the suffering individual. You know when it's the right thing to do.

I love my ice cream with fruits like strawberries, peaches, apples and with 100's and 1000's.
