I hold evil to be nothing more and nothing less that transgression of God's spiritual Law.
A spiritual law is just as concrete and immutable as any physical law. Likewise, the quantum mechanical nature of matter at small scales may be considered 'subjective' in the sense that competing theories exist and not all people believe (or are even aware of) quantum mechanical laws. But if the theory is indeed a law in the truest sense, we are all subject to it regardless of whether or not we believe in it.
Other moral doctrines may posit other sets of laws and hold those to be immutable. "Moral relativism" is a philosophy that derives from the belief that no ultimate moral law exists (or can be determined), and hence each man is subject to his own relative laws (which aren't in fact laws at all). Ergo, "relativism".
Some humanists take a middle ground and posit that a perfect moral law may exist and we may uncover it by blindly asserting certain absolutes (e.g. a man's life is valuable; a man has greater value than an animal; human happiness is preferable to human misery, etc.) and then deducing or empirically testing which actions, values, and ethical standards are most compatible with these absolutes. I've always found it to be glaringly arbitrary, but I still much prefer principled humanism to moral relativism.

Shoobs, you would have been proud of us the other day.
Here we are in a fancy place . . . and my daughter starts humming this tune. Pretty soon we are both singing Bad Romance. Hubby started chuckling, our son started drumming, and onlookers for once didn't get insulted. I think they thought it was some sort of joke and were looking for the hidden cameras.

[ b]Evil existed in man before man himself created religions. So yes, it can be discussed without religion. Tribes and pagan sects dating back thousands of years (who respected the earth and elements) had evil within them - long before religions were created. Ancient Egyptians or Greeks for example - and even dating farther back than that, no doubt.
...link? ...a tongue-in-cheek question, of sorts... since if we're to discuss animism and its historical view of evil, we'd be hard-pressed as it tends not to differentiate any moral imperative... everything is animate, everything is valuable, and nothing is sacred... and as such, anything goes... the purposeful is better understood... the random is simply accepted...

Nothing is "sacred" in your opinion. I disagree. We are much more than biochemically reacting blobs.

SL your comment is as much a religous comment as any on this thread. To be anti religion is a religous opinion.
FYI Egyptians and Greeks had religion. And even ancient tribes had religous rituals they performed.

I certainly believe in evil! I believe in a spirit world, such as angels and demons. I believe what the bible says when it said that Satan and his demons were tossed out of heaven and whoa unto the men on earth. This shows that evil truly exists if you believe in the bible and what it has to say on the subject. According to scripture, Satan and his demons are tempting everyone in hopes of none being saved. Even Jesus was tempted. So, none will be spared. Some, especially the week minded, greedy, etc....will follow and do horrendous things. This is being shown over and over again with all the killing and cruelty in this world.
