Has anyone tried this? I signed up, hoping to start Jan 1. You can track your eating and exercise. I need to get re-motivated.

I did it last year when I was trying to lose weight. My only complaint is that entering foods that aren't standard are a pain to enter (figuring out what the equivalent was that you ate as far as calories go). So, I didn't always track my food. I did track my exercise though - I lost 12 pounds from September 2011 until March 2012 (and then I got pregnant). There is a lot of good information on there. I will say after having gestational diabetes that the next time I feel the need to diet, I'm going to focus in a bit more on the carbs aspect of everything instead of just calories.

I did try it, but if you have no motivation anyway, it's not really going to help. It didn't in my case anyway. And, like muttley said, something non standard is a real PITA. try entering Sweet Tea. They're all store bought or fast food ones. None are brewed at home tea with so much sugar, you'd have to do that on your own. (I have no idea the measurement of sugar I use, just the scoops)

Muttley...damn, I hope I don't get pregnant. ;D
I have a calorie app on my ipad, so maybe that will help me calculate the non regular foods. It looks like you can then save it as a favorite. And I really need to track my exercise. I'm good for a while, then fall off. I joined a challenge, so I hope that helps too. I can be pretty competitive.

If you're competitive that may help. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

I like My Fitness Pal a lot better. I very rarely run across anything that's not already in the database, and you can chat with your MFP friends and leave notes of encouragement, etc for them.
For me the biggest motivation was reaching log in milestones. "P8nts logged in for 20 days in a row" and then all your friends post "Happy 20", etc.

Wow meghan that's awesome! I think I'll check that out too. I thought about asking for Fitbit for Christmas, but my computer is on the fritz, and it isn't compatible with the ipad2. I did find a cool pedometer on Amazon I asked for.
Chocolate...did you lose any weight doing Sparkpeople? I'm hoping it keeps me exercising!

I can relate. I really don't enjoy regular exercise. I like walking outdoors, but in NJ, those days are limited, so I do mall walking. I got my DD the Wii for Christmas, so I'm hoping maybe I can dance my fat ass off.

You need to really hold yourself accountable for all of these tracking apps/web sites to actually work. I did find using this app motivating enough to get me to start working out and sticking with it. Now, jogging and pilates are part of my usual routine and I look forward to my workouts.

Meghan...food wise, do you just track calories, or does it tell you x amount of protein, carbs, etc? I have a hard time with protein. I dont eat chicken, fish, etc., and I eat beef but not a lot. Beans, yogurt, cottage cheese...

It does give you a breakdown of protein, carbs, sugars, fats, fiber, sodium, cholesterol, vitamins, etc. I eat a mostly vegetarian diet (fish once a week).

Ken...thats funny. So many wackos out there! Meghan...I really meant does it tell you you need x amount of protein per day, how many carbs to eat, etc. i dont think I should use my 1200 or so calories on bread. ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

Yes. When you put in all your height, weight, and weekly weight loss goal (i set mine st one pound a week), it then gives you a daily calorie allotment and gives you the numbers for how much carbs, etc. you should be aiming for. Everything is spelled out for you. You put in a meal, it gives you the bottom line.

Perfect. That's what I need. I'm thinking of adding whey protein powder to my diet so I don't have to eat too much meat.

I'm a Sparker. Didn't use it much when I first joined, but I've used it a lot this year to track food and exercise. LOTS of free workout videos. Great articles. Made a few friends. I like it.
as far as entering your own foods, you just have to enter the info once and save it to your favorites. Then it's always available.

I used Sparkpeople in the past. It worked for me. As for being hit on. That seems weird to me. Maybe I'm just not cute enough. i don't tend to post my pic anywhere though.

I'm starting the diet Jan 1, but I've been reading some of the articles. I like the site so far. I'll LOVE it if it keeps me on track.

I also use myfitnesspal.com I thoroughly agree that it's your own motivation that makes the real change.

I started using SparkPeople after a recent physical indicated I needed to have my mouth sewed up. ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/shucks2.png) My physician suggested I attend an exercise/nutrition class she was organizing for her patients. The nutritionist suggest the SparkPeople web page to track our daily eating and exercising habits. I'm motivated enough after seeing how bad I'd been the past year that I'm going well with the change in my eating habits. Thing is I can't seem to eat enough calories so I have to look into what food I can add without adding too many sugars and fat. I've lost 8 pounds since the beginning of the month. LOL, for the heck of it I checked if snow shoveling was on the list of exercises and bingo it's a great way to eat up a boat load of calories quickly. Believe me I am not advocating shoveling, but since I haven't been able to do my afternoon walk recently the shoveling is filing the gap in my exercise regimen. I do use the 'Favorites' option to store frequently used foods. You can click into the favorite food and change the serving size without loosing the original portion you saved to Favorites. I'm crossing my fingers that what I am doing will work.

Congratulations Sammy. 8 pounds is great! I don't think I'll have a hard time eating all the calories. If you're trying to fill it with healthier foods, how about Greek yogurt? There's a ton of walking videos on the internet. Google Leslie Sansone. Do you live by an indoor mall? They usually open early for walkers. I live by a big mall and walk before work. It's safe, and more importantly, climate controlled! And free. Feel free to PM if you'd like- we can do our own Spark support. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Happy, I tried Oikos Greek yogurt and surprise, surprise I like it. Hubby bought Chobani Greek yogurt recently and it wasn't as smooth as the Oikos yogurt. The doctor recommended eating a higher amount of protein for breakfast so I started using egg whites and again found I didn't mind missing the yolk. Oh, and another suggestion by the doctor was using Special K with extra protein. I sprinkle that onto the yogurt for extra crunch.
No matter which nutrition web page you use so long as it has a pie chart to show you how much you have consumed... fat/carbs/protein ... you get to see just where you need to make changes in your nutrition. Big help.

I was wondering how everyone's dieting was going so when I signed in I realized it's been ages since I posted. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/shocked.gif) I'm still using SparkPeople for tracking my food intake and so far I've lost 30 pounds. We are in Florida for the winter and January was easy because we did not have much company but February and this month the weight loss slowed down a bit due to frequent eating out. LOL, I've been eating a lot of broiled fish... salmon mostly, and drinking soda water instead of a mixed drink. ![](http://images.proboards.com/new/undecided.png) (I do miss my margarita's) If I do not exercise enough I notice a weight loss slowdown. Still have a long way to go and hope the next 20+ pounds will be as easy to lose. So, how are the rest of you doing so far?

I'm still Sparking. Good days & bad days. Been doing really well with the exercise & eating lately. Nothing showing on the scale yet, but lots of non-scale victories. I'll take what I can get! oh, the Y added a Tabata class in March. It's at 6AM on Fridays. Not the best time for my schedule, but I try my best to get there. And it is SO WORTH IT! This is my kind of work out! www.fitsugar.com/Printable-Tabata-Workout-23498981 Man, by the last Tabata round I have NOTHING left.
