Who is the most interesting person you have ever met, and why?

Most were the high level execs I met when I was in public accounting and financial consulting. What can I say - I like me some nerd.

I've met lots of famous and wealthy people but most have not impressed me. There was one rabbi that I met who blew me away with his encyclopedic knowledge, I have never met a man who knew so much, probably him.

I didn't realize it until her death, but the woman who served as my doula for my DS's birth is probably the most interesting person I have ever had the privilage of knowing. Some people talk about changing lives, some people don't care, some people talk about making a difference, but she actually did make a difference to possibly thousands of people. She created a teen pregnancy prevention program, so developed the first curriculum in the state for AIDS/HIV awareness, she helped establish a low/no cost healthcare provider for those with no means to get health care. She also founded the local doula organization which provides all of their services for free to those who qualify for WIC - Childbirth Education classes, a support person during labor and delivery and postpartum, breastfeeding help, and prenatal and baby yoga. I didn't know her until the last 7 years of her life and by then she was "retired" and only doing the doula stuff. I had no idea of all the other things she had been involved in until her death and her obituary talked about what she did. She was one of the nicest , most compassionate people you ever met, but she was also a very real person with a great sense of humor and was fun to be around. She put everyone around her at ease.

Back in college I interviewed a woman for a history paper (around 1994). She was 92 yrs old and sharp as they come. She told me stories about people who lived in the town while she was a teenager and what life was like. One story revolved around a wealthy family in town who sent their daughter to Europe to find a husband. They expected her to end up with someone from her same economic background and instead she ended up marrying a pauper. Her parents we apparently devastated and embarrassed. This 92 yr old woman was also an artist and she painted the town from memory. She had one particular painting I loved of a dance/party (or whatever you might call it back then) and she signed it "1918 from memory." She said it was one of her fondest memories as a teenager. Many local restaurants had her painting on their walls. I enjoyed our conversation immensely. I love hearing stories from older people.

Jessica Lynch, escorted her to her car in a parade. Small town girl caught up in a very large world. Hope she is walking without her cane, happy and safe.

My dad. He's the coolest and most diverse person I know. Every day I hope that I can be half the person he is (my mom isn't shabby either for the record).

One of my best friends is pretty awesome. She overcame a HORRIBLE childhood (her mom had her at 14... spent her time being shuffled around from relative to relative, witnessing one of those relatives commit suicide, dealing with her mom's drama), got a full ride to a very good private college, joined the Peace Corps, and spent almost 5 years in Haiti, where she helped develop an HIV education program for teens. She's about the best example of lemonade from lemons I've ever seen. (Of course, she makes me and the rest of our friends look like the biggest underachievers in the world... but we still love her )

My Nana and Papa, in a tie. He is a three war veteran, was Army Air Corps and therefore one of the original members of the Air Force when it was founded. Stationed all over the world, working on whatever random project they assigned him. She was a college educated woman who raised three kids while her husband was busy serving in three wars. She worked as a teacher while he served in WWII and then followed him around the world. She convinced him to retire to the same small town where they both grew up. And resumed her career as a teacher.

Most interesting would have to be my grandmother's cousin. She was arrested during prohibition for running an illegal distillery, one of her husbands was mysteriously ran over in their driveway, and she claims she was on the cover of Time Magazine many many years ago. I know the distillery is true because I have the news paper clipping from her arrest. The rest is a mystery.

Off the top of my head - my ex's aunt. She lived a high-end flight attendent's life, which I found fascintating. She has been every where & met so many people. She was the personal flight attendent for an NBA team, a Las Vegas mogul, a Saudi Prince & probably more I never heard about. She has pictures with many of the famous people she has met during her career.
It did cost her though, in that she could never settle down with that career, often she was basically on-call in case her client wanted to fly somewhere. Although, maybe for her it wasn't a sacrifice.

A dear man with whom I have enjoyed a friendship of thirty years. He is one of the kindest, most caring people I have ever known. And having watched him endure the loss of his son, he has also proven to be one of the strongest people I have ever known. He makes everyone around him better and stronger. Instead of us supporting him, he has been the rock for all of us as we grieve. I don't know how he does it.

My dad- I say this because he has had an interesting life but he doesn't really talk about it much. Every once and a while he'll be in a mood in which he'll blurt something out. He was staying at my house once and GI Jane was on tv. It was the scene where she was captured and is being basically tortured (I think it's SERE training) and he says all casual like "yeah, that was hell when I did it too". They had planned to send his Seabees unit into the thick of things and he had to go through that training. He had never mentioned going through it before that night. To this day I don't think my siblings really know either- they never think to ask him about his military career. He shares a lot of stories with me because I was in the Air Force. He built up his businesses from nothing to very successful. He has several "lifetime" certifications in our state that allow him to do work in our industry. He is considered an expert in our field and people seek his advice daily. Going to national conventions with him is a blast because he is treated like royalty. It's pretty weird.
But deep down he is a genuinely nice guy. He is a member of what we jokingly call "Bible Club". It's a group of guys that meet for breakfast every Saturday morning. Have been meeting together for years and years. When Katrina hit they all quietly worked together to send several truck loads of supplies down there (one of the other members owns a trucking company). They found out their regular waitress was going to be out of work because the restaurant had a fire so they went to her landlord and paid her rent for 6 months and wouldn't ever admit to her that it was them that did it.
They meet the most interesting people at their breakfasts. They now dine in the restaurant attached to the "nice" hotel in our city. If someone comes in that looks interesting they invite them to join the group for breakfast for the day. They meet several of the Blue Angels when they had an airshow here this summer. One of the Bible Club guys is part owner of the Timberwolves so they have dined with several players. When the Vikings practice in town they have dined with a few of those players and the coaches. But they never make a big deal about it and they are so out of touch that they never really know who the people are until halfway through breakfast. Like I said if someone comes in and looks interesting they wave at him and invite him to join them for breakfast.

I met a couple in Florida who were from Poland before WWII. They were Jewish and moved to NYC after the war where she taught German in public school. When I met them she had had a stroke 3 years before and I was part time caregiver for her.
She spoke Polish, German and English all in the same sentence so only her husband knew what she was saying. They were both elderly but he spent all of everyday taking care of her except 2 hours when a caregiver came to bathe her and do the laundry and vacuum while he went for a walk alone.
I am sure they would have had some stories to tell but I only worked for them 2 weeks while the caregiver took a vacation.

My business partner. He is talented at just about everything. He is a free spirit. He has always lived life on his own terms. He works hard but has never been or will be anyone's ass kisser. He would rather sell pencils on the corner than do something he doesn't believe in. He doesn't invest, spend, save the way the rest of us to. He takes 3-4 months off a year and goes to Costa Rica and hangs with the locals. He also races cars in old timey car races. Wherever we go he seems to run into someone he knows. When i went to his daughter's wedding there was everyone there from corporate execs to hippies smoking weed. He seems to appeal to everyone .

Well, the most interesting person…I’m with a cazy New Zelander…who knew.
I guess it would have to be someone extremely intelligent, Marie Curie, maybe, extremely artistic, Frida Kahlo, and beautiful. But there are so many definitions of beauty. I change my mind twice a week.
But yeah, she would have to be that...

Marie Curie was not beautiful, smart as all get out, but not what I'd call attractive.

I find all people interesting. There's always a lot going on under the surface, except for my one friend, who in the immortal words of another friend turned out to be an onion ring rather than an onion, no layers there. DH's family is really interesting, probably because they are all engineers and look at the world at a different angle.

Marie Curie was not beautiful, smart as all get out, but not what I'd call attractive. She also wasn't a man. The most interesting (and influential) man in my world was my grandfather. He came from England and settled here in the very early 1900's. He was very wise and took pride in learning as much as he could sink his teeth into on any subject. He started his own business - which is still flourishing to this day. He was a very talented artist and craftsman - many of his pieces - both artwork and furniture - are in the local museum as well in family members' homes. He lived a very simple, but comfortable life - and taught me many lessons - was a fantastic story-teller and an influence on anyone whose life he touched. He's probably the one man who's made the biggest impression on my life. .

Since the thread is about men, I'd have to do a lot of thinking.
My deceased grandmother is by far the most interesting woman I've ever met. Lived to be 94 and used to talk about all the changes she had seen in her lifetime. Had a good mind right up until the end. Not an educated woman, but a very loving woman.
