I am sure there's some philosophical connotations behind that choice too.

I think I was in MS. My one sister is a year younger than me and we both went into the bathroom upstairs and used Mom's electric shaver without her knowing.
She would be my answer to whoever started that "who did you get in trouble with growing up" thread. ;D

My mom and I got our ears pierced together. I was 6. I think my BFF (who was there the day I got my ears pierced) had to wait until she was 10. I never had the urge to get additional piercings- ears or anywhere else. I do wear the same earrings almost every day, only sometimes wearing something different for a day at a time.

ear piercing - I was 8 when my mom let mine done after asking her for months. When I was 17, I wanted to my ears pierced again, but my mom wouldn't sign the consent. It wasn't worth it to have my dad sign it and start a war between them. About a month after I turned 18, I got it done. It lasted a bit before I took them out and they have since started to close. DD is now 16 months old and I would let her wait until I thought she was old enough to take care of them. Off hand, probably around 8 depending on her maturity level, etc. shaving - I stole my mom's razor periodically as I was too embrassed to ask her. I was probably 11 or 12 when I did that.

We weren't allowed to wear makeup until we went to HS. Lipgloss was acceptable in MS. Those tins of lip gloss were all the rage back then: blocked due to malware/-CiPve3diqB8/TdZZ06mXnOI/AAAAAAAABrA/7gW7OOTs6q4/s1600/Retro-Vintage-Lip-Lickers-Tins.jpg [/img]
That is exactly the rule we had for DD. I actually forgot about it completely. She didn't though. Man did she pull out makeup I didn't even remember for her first day of HS.

Some parents do it for picture day. A bit too much of it IMHO.

DD started shaving in middle school. But when she was 8, I took her to get her brows waxed. She has my dads brows just like I do. . No way was I making her go through years of looking like that.

I can't remember how old I was when I started shaving but I do remember just using Mom's razor and not asking. Mine hasn't seemed to be dulling overly quickly so I guess DD hasn't done that yet.

My DD asked me when she was about 5th grade about shaving. I actually don't really even have to shave. I told her I wasn't really much help but if she wanted I would buy some different things for her to try out. If I had to guess she borrowed her Dads razor's before that.

DD is in 5th grade so I'm kind of thinking she'll be wanting to soon, but she has never been in any hurry to grow up. I think she cried when she turned 4 because she wanted to stay 3 and not get bigger. lol

Our granddaughter who is now 16 1/2 (she continually reminds me of the 1/2 started wearing eye makeup before she entered Jr. high school. She looked like an owl. Gentle suggestions on how to apply the BLACK eye liner were ignored. So being sensible mother and grandmother we figure she would soon tire of the look. Now she doesn't wear an ounce of makeup and I wish she would sometimes since she is a redhead and looks gorgeous when she does wear it in moderation.

Kids won't listen to parental figures so I solved it by taking DD to Clinique and they showed her how to apply correct,y so she didn't look like a Goth streetwalker. Bless them!

When I was going into 7th grade, so I would have been 12, my mother let me wear very pale eye shadow, lip gloss and back then they had clear mascara. I think that was appropriate age and make-up wise. I think I started wearing more makeup once I got to high school.
Now on a daily basis I wear my Bare Minerals foundation, a little blush, some mascara and tinted lip balm. If I'm getting a little more dressed up I wear some pencil eyeliner and eyeshadow, and if I'm getting really dressed up I bust out the liquid eyeliner and darker eyeshadow.

Eh, I don't see a problem with 8 or even less for photographs. Wearing it all the damned time at 8 seems to be a bit precocious.
Around puberty seems to make sense. Depends on the kid and the make-up, I expect. Lip gloss/a little subtle eyeshadow is different than CFM red lipstick, bold eyeliner, and the works.

I think everything was around middle school for me. I know I had the pancake CoverGirl makeup then, and I think I started to break out then so my mom let me wear makeup. I had to wait until 13 until I got my ears pierced - my mom said it was a combo of being old enough to take care of them and to have grown enough so they got pierced in the center (heard recently that girls who get their ears pierced as babies don't have off centered holes so I guess that was a load of crock). My mom let me pick in middle school when to start shaving with a warning of "once you start you can't really stop." Middle school was also when I started bleaching my lip hair because I came home crying when one guy made fun of me.
