So do most "old order" Mennonites, which makes that tasteless stab at humor above a complete fail.

I live in an area of the country with many Mennonites. All of them drive cars, shop, have electricty, use technology, etc. My gyno is a Mennonite. She drives to work, uses the phone to call in a prescription and enters my test results into a computer. I hope the ladies are ok. I still can't make the link work. GEL-Here's the 'in-depth' article from the link:

Your article states nothing about the perp being additionally charged with a hate crime. In fact the articles mentions nothing about charges other than being held on $1 million bail. The attack, according the article, happened yesterday so I imagine he has not even had a preliminary hearing as to what the charges are and just the setting of bail. So before you jump the shark and bring Muslims into the discussion, why not wait until you know all the facts. the attack was actually on Friday, Skippy...here are the charges: Read more: lancasteronline.com/article/local/794078_DA-calls-assault-on-elderly-women-in-Clay-Twp--one-of-county-s--most-heinous--crimes-.html#ixzz2FQC819NjDo "hate crimes" get added later or how does that work?? Anyone know any muslims...I bet they'd know the hate crime laws ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)

You know what? That was nice of you, but unnecessary. It's me who should apologize. My heart is broken over the events of the last couple of days and I can't find a smile anywhere. Normally, I probably would have chuckled. I laugh all the time at Christian jokes. It's just my mood. I apologize. Please excuse my snottiness.

"Yes. Thousands of U.S. Christians are murdered because of their faith every year." The world is bigger than the U.S Tennesesseer, you should know that. But we cannot force the world to charge the killers of Christians (or Muslims, Jews, etc.) with hate crimes can we Phoenix, you should know that. What? That's not even close to what he was saying.

Then where in the U.S. are these thousands of Christians being murdered for their faith yet their killers are not charged with hate crimes? It wasn't me who brought up the killing of thousands of Christians in the context of a thread regarding hate crimes in the U.S.

Out of context of the article, yes, but my hunch was that his point was the media largely ignores hate crimes against Christians, here and abroad.

Yes, my original statement was for the world. But there's also violance against Christians here at home too, and the media avoids both subjects.
A quick google search shows that somewhere between 100,000 and 150,000 Christians die every year for their faith, mostly in Muslim Countries.

That is what is commonly referred to as Pennsylvania's hate crimes law.

And in Florida as well. Snowbirds, just like everyone else. ;D And there are also a number of groups on the move from the Northeast and Midwest who are branching out into other parts of the country, looking for large tracts of land for farming. The issue is that in the areas where they are most heavily settled now, land is getting scarce and expensive, and Amish families still tend to be on the large side. The standard practice of leaving the family farm to the eldest son often means the other children don't inherit, and have to find land elsewhere, for find work to make money to buy what land becomes available, assuming they want to remain where they were born and raised. So some families are choosing to move on as a group and begin new settlements. This is a pretty current look at where the Amish currently live in the U.S. and Canada; I am unable to find a similar guide for Mennonites. amishamerica.com/amish-state-guide/

People are still in mourning. They don't feel it is okay to be lighthearted during this time. So, we can only discuss serious stuff, and anything that highlights the country's perceived and/or real problems. Hopefully next week we will all get our sense of humor back.

So true, you wouldn't believe how few people have laughed at my array of Kindergartener jokes this week.

It's not his own religion, he USED to be a Mennonite. It seems pretty common that people who convert (or give up other lifestyle choices like smoking) tend to backlash against those who were like them more than others.

I don't. Religions like this can be very manipulative and oppressive. Actually, anyone raised by parents that puts God over family and expects their kids to do the same can have offspring that come out bitter and angry. It really depends on the individuals involved and how they executed their belief system.

It it's anything like that, there's a whole buttload of bitterness, anger and shunning. Some families disowned their kids for wanting a regular life and daring to break tradition. It broke my heart to see the kids going home to visit and the families acting like they're invisible.

My friend was adopted by Christians. They considered her their Christian duty to raise not as a baby to love. When she was little they made her go door to door with them to spread the word. She was a straight A student but they made her drop put ofter 10th grade because she had enough education for a girl. They wanted her to spend all her time doing work for their religion. An older sister got pregnant twice because even after the first time they wouldn't tell her what caused it, talking is condoning. Someone else clued her in but the parents didn't believe in talking about sex.
She resented them and found her birth family, got her GED and made her own life but had nothing more to do with the people who did their duty to raise her. I could see some being angry enough for being abused in the name of religion to hate.
Christian sometimes also do things that are illegal like talking about their religion in a country were it is illegal undermining the state religion, it is a risk they take if they are willing to die for their faith rather than allow others the freedom to control information in their country.
