I've been out of the workforce for 8 years now. Everything I say sounds like a stuttering fool.

I have one, but I need a snappier one... 10 seconds is about the longest I can talk about my job without others zoning out.

I have an elevator pitch for the novella I'm working on. I can come up with quick ones for any of my short stories, too. Not certain I have one about me- either personally or professionally

I'm supposed to have a 10 second pitch? Does "No I am not a student, I am a lab technician for X" count?

Start by making a list of 15 things you would like to tell the world about you (or homeschooling.)
Prioritize the list with the most important being on top.
Look to combine topics if they are repetitive.
Prioritize again.
Write a sentence and some connectors for the top 3 reasons.
Say it out loud and see if it makes sense.
Look at the rest of the list and make sure there is nothing in there you really want people to know.
Adjust your pitch.
Practice it 10 times from your paper.
Practice it 10 times from memory.
Say it in the shower and at least once on your commute.
It will be natural after that.

I was in a class last week where we worked on this very thing. The class was all about learning to network.

We don't have elevators where I work, so I don't have an elevator pitch......

My 10 second pitch " I'm an accountant and a Mom, which means I keep track of how much the kids are costing me". That usually warms things up a bit.
