From my too many moons in the Chicago burbs I learned how to stay warm in the winter months-- all 9 of them: A "Hot Toddy" is no more complicated than tea, brandy, and lemon, but as you can probably tell the combinations are almost limitless. Here's my favorite: Brew a cup of Earl Grey tea, squeeze one lemon wedge, add one tablespoon of honey, and 2 oz of your favorite brandy-- I like Osocalis rare alambic. It has a fuller fruit flavor than most Cognac- stands up well with the honey and lemon flavors. I (used to) like to make a few cups for the thermos and go sledding when we got lots of snow. Now, I'll save the recipe for a walk on the beach during those brisk 60 degree days... ;D

I think I could use a Hot Toddy tonight. It is so stinkin' cold here today. I've only ever made them with plain black tea. I never thought of using a flavored tea like Early Grey.

My favorite variation of the hot toddy is to use a 2 cup microwavable liquid measuring cup. Microwave one cup of water in the measuring cup to steep one tea bag (whatever is you favorite hot tea). Then add two teaspoons of sugar and one teaspoon lime juice. Fill the cup with cranberry juice and microwave again to very hot. Pour some (about 3 ounces) of your favorite brandy in two mugs or coffee cups and pour the hot mixture into the cups with the brandy. Vary the recipe according to taste.

Hot cocoa with Rumplemintz. (100 proof peppermint shcnapps.) Warms you right up. If you're congested, there's a added bonus that the mint clears the sinuses. A couple of those and you don't know you're cold or sick.

A local favorite is a "Tom and Jerry" which is a hot toddy with a meringue topping. They've also gotten fancy and started making them with Kailua, baileys and other frou frou liquors.
