Yes, and the more often I see the incorrect version, the more it embeds itself into my head and makes me doubt my original spelling...

We need to start speaking Spanish and using the metric system. American English and math are to, or two or too complicated.

Thanks. I think. I don't really pay that much attention Oh, but the punctuation matters a great deal. How else do you read intention behind the Thanks. Are they happy & friendly Thanks!, more formal Thanks. or just weird Thanks... like they are leaving something unsaid. <Avoiding the use of " " to avoid pissing off people> I know it is a common issue, but I have trouble reading meanings in text. My boss & I had an argument the other day over a different email (different sub) that he said was sarcastic & I saw absolutely no sarcasm. I thought the guy was being serious.

I do it a lot. At least in forums that are meant to be direct communication/ interaction, not in formal writing. I don't know why? Sometimes it feels like pausing, sometimes like 'yada,yada'... Etc.
If I wrote thanks... It would mean thanks (and all that jazz that goes with thanks...)
If I wanted to be sarcastic I'd type thanks?

I've never paid that much attention to one word emails. I register my boss responded and delete it. I don't read anything into them.

I've posted this before, but when I worked at a CPA firm I sent an email to HR about an ejaculation I had. A few minutes later was a very embarrassing conversation.

Archie - what were you trying to say? An Evaluation I was doing. I type fast and expect autocorrect to know what I am talking about.

What did you mean to say? or, who did you mean to say it to? Angel, I would think the subcontractor who emails thanks . . . Is just too lazy/busy to type out the rest of the thought so instead of Thanks for helping me with project xyz. you get thanks. . . There probably should have been quotation marks in that example - but now I am afraid to use them.

Cut the guy some slack. I've been there when sending really short emails. An exclamation point is too much, anyone who even kind of knows me knows I'm not an exclamation point kinda person. A period seems too abrupt on a one or two word email. I absolutely loathe anyone who puts emoticons in work email. The triple dot is like me saying, I'd like to type up a full email, but I'm busy although I wanted to take a second to say thanks, let you know I got the email, or whatever. It could also be taken as sarcasm though.
Usually I just leave off punctuation entirely on a short email, which probably drives the language nazis crazy.

Quotation marks are fine when used in context! It's just when you use them in lieu of capitalizing/highlighting a word that they get annoying (at least to me - but I am extraordinarily anal-retentive). E.g. Yesterday I spent ALL day doing research on the First Amendment - vs - Yesterday I spent "all" day doing "research" on the First Amendment. ETA - I can't embed Hulu, but if you look up the Chris Farley/Bennett Brauer skit - THAT is what plays in my head whenever I see extraneous quote marks. Man, I miss old Chris.

How about:
Yesterday Archie spent all day doing "research" on an "evaluation" he was doing.

Hahaha! That "bugs" me too. I've "noticed" it a lot on here lately. I think it bothers me because then I read it "sarcastically", with mental "finger-quotes". OMG! My mother-in-law does this on Facebook all the time! She's like - Go "Steelers"!!! or - Hanging out with our little man "Timmy" today!! Umm, Timmy is your grandson's real name, no need for quotations! Little man is what needs quotations!

I just don't see how the dots add up to sarcasm. Meh. Some of that may be my feelings towards the dude. My boss described his as rather thorough when doing stuff. That would be an understatement. He will send me an email at 4 PM one day and if he doesn't receive an immediate response, I will get the same email with "Do you have an answer for the below yet" 6 AM the next day. Which is more annoying, when the answer is the same as what I told him several days earlier to the same question, but he is just double-checking to be thorough. (I really had an urge to use quotes for double-checking & thorough there). So then when I answer his question & get a "Thanks..." response I can't help but feel he is annoyed that I did not manage to answer the initial email between 4 PM & 6 AM. Like what he means is "Thanks for finally bothering to answer my question" or something similar. Not the first time this has happened & whenever he asks a question twice (unnecessarily), when I get him an answer, the response is always "Thanks..."

Waffle - take this: ... (Are your feeling hurt?) My feeling? You want to know if my one feeling is hurt? Don't you care about the rest of my feelings? Anyway, no my feelings aren't hurt. Should they be?

ouch! I'm big on ellipsis.....I didn't know I was bugging people I think an ellipsis is just the three dots, rather than five. The plural is ellipses. Just FYI. And when used correctly, they are fine punctuation tools!

Angel, I think I work with that guy.
The kicker was when he sent me an email at about 9pm on a Friday (it was marked urgent, but was not even remotely an urgent request). I checked my email on Saturday and fired off a quick response. He responded with "Thanks. Don't get into the habit of working on weekends!"
Dude - if people like you didn't email me with artificially urgent requests on a Friday night, I wouldn't have to respond to email on the weekends...

I just got a "Thanks so much!" response to an email. I assume she's a happy girl. ;D My big pet peeve is apostrophe abuse. I'm sure I screw it up now and then but people need better proofreading skills when they're about to put a business sign or billboard. I used to drive past a sign every day on my way to work that said <<Town name>> Cottage's.

I've used both. When I write "Thanks!", it means that was everything I needed to find out. If I write "Thanks...", I may need to ask a follow-up question.

Perhaps this is the guy's reasoning. He does keep coming back with more questions. I know, I did at least warn you that this was a stupid thread.

Has anyone else felt that as they get older they make far more stupid grammar/spelling mistakes? I find somehow my skills are going way downhill. ------------- Not grammar, but other skills. The other day, I tried to make a phone call with my TV remote.
