I’m little confused about the original story, if the couple in question is here only a little over a year and already milking the system how did they get here in the first place? If I remember correctly one of many requirements to enter this country legally is to prove you will not be a burden to the society. Did they lie? Or something unexpected happened? But yeah getting back more then one pays in in taxes is dumb, when I first heard of it being possible years and years ago I was shocked.

We had 4 kids and tried to get as much as we could each month rather than let gov use it interest free. A refund is not a reward. Did they use too many deductions all year? I don't think we had the child tax credit until our last one was in HS though.

Really Arch! How is that possible? Where are $10K came from? I could see it. The max EITC is $5666. The child tax credit would be $3000. Making work pay is $800. The other $600 or so was probably withheld from the paychecks. They must have hit the royal sweetspot if they did this though. Make too little & you start cutting the EITC, child tax credit, & making work pay. Make too much & you start losing the EITC.

State refund could add to the total. NY matches a portion of the federal EITC (30%) and CTC (33%). Although NY only matches the CTC on children over 4. Couldn't figure that one out.

This is interesting reading: custom.yahoo.com/taxes/article-112061-0c8961e7-144f-45ba-920f-8df98fd4d028-by-one-measure-federal-taxes-lowest-since-1950"• A married couple with two young children and a combined income of $25,000 will pay no federal income taxes for 2010. Instead, they'll get a payment of $7,085 -- up from $6,700 in 2008. The larger payment comes mainly from a more generous Earned Income Tax Credit, which provides subsidies to the working poor. They will also get a $1,000-per-child tax credit. The example illustrates how complicated tax returns can be, even for low-income families, said Kathy Pickering, executive director of The Tax Institute at H&R Block."

But the Child Tax Credit is just that a credit. IF there is any left, it then becomes Additional Child tax credit and an actual refund(cash). I can't remember if you zero out before the child tax credit how the additional figures but I don't think you can get the full 3k. But it's been years since I seen the worksheet on figuring that so I may have forgotten.
And another thing...that EITC goes up every year along with your income limit. A married couple can make almost 50k and still receive some. Not much but some. If they have kids that is.
Wonder what would happen if there were no one to take those low paying jobs? If everyone was to only work if they made over 50k/yr what would happen to all the fast food places, factory's, Walmarts/Kmarts, etc. I can't imagine that McD's and Walmart will ever pay their lowly workers that much money.

I can't believe anyone can be jealous of a family making $13,000 a year. If you're happy with what you're making and can support yourself and any family you have, what difference does it make what others make, especially if they're living in poverty? If you're not happy with what you make, get off your butt and do things necessary such as education, retraining, or looking for another job that will get you to the point where you're satisfied with your income. I've always had the attitude that what anyone else makes is irrelevant to me, and I've never gotten upset or angry over anyone else's income. I'm probably a lot happier than people who waste their time & energy on jealousy. I'm 57 and retired. I'm sure there are a lot of people my age & older who worked a lot harder than me who can't imagine when they'll be able to retire. They made choices when they were younger & so did I. My choices led to a comfortable retirement in my mid 50s. Their choices didn't. I have things that they'll never have, and they have things I'll never have. Everyone chooses their own path. To be mad at others who made different choices than you, had better luck than you do, might be are smarter than you & can do more with half the effort, or are living in poverty but appear to you to be gaming the system, does you no good at all. Here's some advice to anyone who is really mad because someone you know got a bigger tax refund: Adjust your deductions to the point that you get a bigger refund than the person you're jealous of and chill.

They were supposed to come here and start their life as is. However our kind goverment said 'oh they have kids and they are entitled to foodstamps and insurance'... And I have NO problem with it as helping newcomers is a miztva of Good Old Uncle Sam and thanks for that. However I think it should had stop there. Foodstamps to not to starve and insurance is a nessesity because kids had not asked parents to take them here. So we covering this issue with giving kids helping hand. When it comes to parents - you won a green card - go bust your butt to pay rent and clothes for your offsprings!!!

First, no offense, but my head hurts trying to understand this poster. Second, I can't believe anyone can be jealous of a family making $13,000 a year. I remember when my DH and I were in grad/med school and our annual income was a little more than that. I wouldn't trade places now for all the tea in China (Even with their amazing $10,000 tax refund that they didn't earn)

First, no offense, but my head hurts trying to understand this poster. I hear ya. I think it's crazy to put so much time and energy into someone elses situation instead of concentrating on your own.

"paying $10-$20 like most ladies would for a grocery store test off the shelf" What? Why not go to the dollar store, they have them there for a dollar. I thought the same thing! Anyone who pays that much $$ for a pregnancy test is crazy! You can buy them online for less that $1/test. It all looks for the same hormone!

umm I'm gonna guess they will "know" when they do the exam. Things ARE a bit different down there while pregnant. lol It would be hard to tell very early in pregnancy whether or not a woman was expecting just by physical exam. Things look pretty much normal down there for the first few months. Hormones and ultrasounds are pretty much the only definitive ways to know.

A family of four living on $32,085? That sounds like a rough life, even with the huge tax refund. DH and I live in a LOCLA and need more than that to live a comfortable life. I'd rather get no refund and live my lifestyle than get a huge refund and live their lifestyle. Taxes are a part of life we all have to deal with. Does it suck that other people get my $$ for barely working? Yep. Is there anything I can do about it? Nope, not really. I vote every election, but it really doesn't make a difference.

I agree with you Nurse - I was just posting a statistic. Realistically if we did not suplement low wage earners we could end up with a situation like Egypt has on its hands.

Hormones and ultrasounds are pretty much the only definitive ways to know. Really? For both my pregnancies I went in at 6 weeks & the doc felt around & said - yep looks like you're pregnant. She then offered to do an ultrasound each time.
