Who has an Elf? What's his name? Do you have him do anything other than hang out?
Ours is Chippy.
A few nights ago, DH set up a party with Chippy, Buzz Lightyear, Tinkerbell, Barbie, and Lotso Bear where they were drinking sodas and playing cards under the Christmas Tree. He took a picture and left a note from Chippy to the kids with a picture of the party.
I saw a picture on FB the other day where an Elf was in a bowl of colored minimarshmallows (like a hot tub) with Barbie.

Sounds cute, but I wonder if your husband has too much time on his hands.

I don't have an Elf on the Shelf...it kind of creeps me out. Although, I am loving all the Elf on the Shelf posts on FB. One of my favorites is of the Elf scrubbing his butt with someone's toothbrush!

SMIL wanted to get one for our 2.5 YO, but we nixed the idea for this year. Besides his not being mature enough to get the idea of it yet, the Elf thing looks sort of creepy to me, I've gotta say... ...I don't like clowns either.

We do not have an elf. DD asked if we could get one and I said to her "with your behavior lately do you really want an elf to report back to Santa every night?".

Sounds cute, but I wonder if your husband has too much time on his hands. Yes, he does. But he doesnt drink much, gamble much, run around on me, and he's usually pretty good to me, and great the the kids. If this is the worst he does, I consider myself very fortunate.

My daughter asked if we could get one. First off, she's 10 - aren't we a little past this? I told her we threw away the bookshelf - so there would be no where for him to sit.

I've been tempted to get one and mess with DH. Gwen is too little to get it. I decided to pass once I saw the price tag. It's much more fun to move the baby cabbage patch doll around the house, DH finds it creepy.
I freaked him out by sitting it on the toilet in the middle of the night so when he got up in the morning it was staring at him.
I suppose I could get the elf into more creative places than I can a cabbage patch doll. .. . hmmm

from the website: Have you ever wondered how Santa knows who is naughty and who is nice?
The Elf on the Shelf®: A Christmas Tradition is the very special tool that helps Santa know who to put on the Naughty and Nice list. This interactive holiday hide-and-seek tradition is perfect for children and families of all ages.
The tradition begins when Santa sends his scout elves out to Elf Adoption Centers. Waiting for their families to bring them home, these patient elves hibernate until their family reads The Elf on the Shelf, gives their elf a very special name, and registers their adoption online. Once named, each scout elf will receive its Christmas magic and become a part of the family’s Christmas each and every year.
Excellent listeners and even better observers, these scout elves are the eyes and ears of Santa Claus. Although they cannot be touched, or else they may lose their magic, the elf will always listen and relay messages back to Santa. Taking in all the day-to-day activities around the house, no good deed goes unnoticed; these scout elves take their job seriously.
Each night, after the family goes to bed, the scout elf uses his magical Christmas powers to fly back to the North Pole. Once there, the elf will make his or her daily report to Santa and visit with elf friends where they will tell stories about their beloved families, play with the reindeer, and of course, sneak some of Mrs. Claus’ cookies!
Before the family awakes each morning, their special scout elf will fly back to their home from the North Pole. However, since these elves like to play games, don’t expect to find them in the same spot! While some like to hide in the freezer (probably because it reminds them of the North Pole) and others prefer to sit on the fireplace mantle or hang from the chandelier, these elves love to play hide-and-seek with their families.
On Christmas Eve, the scout elf will listen for Santa’s bell and then fly back to the North Pole until the next season, wishing every girl and each boy a Christmas of peace and a year full of joy. Join the tradition and adopt your own Elf on the Shelf now!

We have an elf on the shelf from when we were kids.
One of the eyes is starting to fall off. We call him "One-Eye," and he does kinda creep the kids out. But, my kids are old enough to "get" concept, and well, I wish we had that kind of leverage for months other than December.
I'd like to buy a new one, but I don't want the video, etc. I just want the elf.
ETA: We don't move ours every day. We're slackers.

We have Angry Daddy in his Chair with a Scotch in one hand and a belt in the other, to keep the kids in line.

I love the marketing on it - "A Christmas Tradition" - didn't she write the book in like 2005? Can you just declare something a tradition?

Add me to the "it's creepy" group. although dh's Christmas decorations, inherited from his parents I think, includes 2 elves in that same position. And yeah, I think they're creepy too.
One of the guys here at work was talking about it. So when my immediate supervisor found an elf with her Christmas stuff, we put it in his office and try to move it every couple of days.

One of my friends had their elf making flour angels in the kitchen one day, kinda cute. I'd prefer a non creepy looking elf though.

When I was little, we had an elf named Charlie that only my dad could see, and he'd tell us when Charlie was watching us and would tell Santa about our bad behavior.

I too think the elf has a creepy look to him, thank goodness my kids are past the stage where they would "get" something like that.

I'd like an Elf on a Shelf, but my kids are 17 and 18 so I think I missed the boat. Besides... HE DOES NOT BEHAVE!!
I've seen him taking marshmallow baths in people's bathroom sink. I've seen him fill the toilet bowl with gold fish. I've seen him draw sharpie moustaches on children. He's a sneaker!!!

I can think of lots of Electrical Engineers, CS guys, Physics people, that would do something like this. Phoenix, they do it to destress instead of going out drinking, etc. Although they do that too but like techies. They discover good beers, some start brewing, some might become brew masters, etc.

I wish this had been around when my brother and sister were little... The only thing I could do to get them to behave was to pick up the phone and call "Santa" (the local bank's Time & Temperature number). It worked for a surprising number of years.

I'm tempted to get it him and put him on our headboard so when DH wakes up and opens his eyes there will be this creepy elf staring down at him and grinning.
