Long long time lurker, back in the day of msn with miller the large, etc. First time posting so here goes: What would you do if you clearly overheard an employee try to lure and inform clients of another employee, that they (the clients) could switch to him if they wanted to? Hope I was clear enough. Thank you for your input in advance.

A few questions:
1. Is this a commission based position?
2. Are you a supervisor or a peer?
3. Is luring clients against company policy?

This is a commission based position and I am a peer. I can't imagine that it is okay with the company, but it is definately morally wrong. I am new to the position, but not new to the field. My concern is if he can do this to a 30 year vet he would have no problem doing this to me. My first instinct was to warn the veteran. I don't want to cause any trouble. And one other thing, this guy has a bad temper. I was introduced to that 2 weeks into the position as he misunderstood my question.

Welcome Moneyminded.
Have a chat with the vet and give him a heads up.

I'd keep my head down unless you know for sure it is against company policy. You are the new guy, this person has been here longer than you. Not only are you going to tattle tale but you are going to create office drama with the other vetran who may very well already know what the guy is doing and not be saying anything.
Look up your company policy and if it is against it quietly document him over time. Once you have been at the job for long enough that you hvae proven yourself and have some clout you can bring your documentation to your superior.
But right now all you are going to look like is a pot stirrer. You have no real proof beyond hearing a conversation, he can easily deny it and it's going to be his word against hte new guy. You're not going to come out looking good.

That's what I thought. Not into drama at all and being the new person I am not about to start that kind of reputation. Been keeping my head down for weeks, I am just really bothered by someone that would go behind someone else's back and try to take another person's client. Ticked me off big time. Guess I will continue keeping my head down and document. swamp, thanks for the welcome, I always enjoy your posts. I get not wanting to working as an attorney, I was in the legal field myself (not as an attorney) and got really burned out so I switched careers and became a BIG girl in this field. Love it! And...many times I wanted to tell the vet, but I think I'll watch the guy hang himself. He's such a jerk!

You could casually ask the vet if there are certain people to look out for?

I kinda like this. You already know that the other person is not trustworthy, so you just want to see if everyone else knows that too.
Although, maybe the vet and the client aren't getting along so well. Would the company perfer to keep the customer, but assign a new rep? I always feel so committed when I go to some random hair stylist, and then I realize that I might like the person in the next chair better. But there is no way to hop over - it is like breaking up with your boyfriend and then asking for his brother's phone number.

Hope I was clear enough. Thank you for your input in advance. What is your employer's policy regarding this? Is there an employee handbook given to new employees where rules of conduct and business ethics are mentioned? I would give the veteran a heads-up. And the veteran should do nothing immediately but keep a watch for any of his clients leaving him.

You could casually ask the vet if there are certain people to look out for? You could also as the vet or someone else if poaching clients in common. You could just say you've overheard some conversations and want to know if it's something you need to watch out for.

@mmc - um...no...good idea though. Today was pretty interesting though. The jerk was being a jerk to the assistant to the vet and she has had it. She is intimidated by the him and talked to her "other boss" about it. Well, 'lo and behold her other boss quickly emailed "the big boss" and something is going to go down soon, I was warned. Yikes! I knew the hanging was going to happen just didn't realize this soon...

You learned something about this person so you will have your own back now.
Other than that, I would keep my mouth shut. You don't know everything about the situation. You don't know everything about this company. Maybe the vet will be out tomorrow and the guy you overheard will be your boss.
You simply don't know enough yet to get involved in office politics. It's a dangerous game at best, and it's a killer for newbies.

Nope. There will always be drama queens and kings at the job. I worked with 3 men. No better. They'd always be pissing and moaning about each other to me, who didn't give a crap about any of them because they were lazy good for nothing's! Since then, dept head was forced to transfer and lousy principal was asked to retire. I hear things are better. I sure hope so.

Hmmm... I'm wondering if you were hired so that they'd have his replacement (you) all trained up when they fire him.

Hmmm... I'm wondering if you were hired so that they'd have his replacement (you) all trained up when they fire him. My brother used to do that. He manages a chain store and for a while he was their local hatchet man. He'd go into a crappy performing store and run ads. He'd get the new people in, train them and document the rest of the staff. The good people stayed, the bad got canned. After a year or two, they'd move him to the next store. He's now permanently got his own store but I'm told his name is still feared in the area. His kids work for the same company but in different stores.
