Eye roll at Aiden/Jayden/Hayden/Caden... And for some people, just one name isn't enough, so you end up with like... "Aiden-Christopher".
If I ever have a daughter, I may name her Melendy, after the voice of She-ra. Hmmm... Melendy Jerrica <lastname>... outrageous!
For a son, I have to choose between a proud Klingon name, or something that will be recognized and not trendy. Bonus if I can throw an element in there somehow... M'Rel Randor Thomas Argon <lastname>.

Thyme: In the 80's Sheila was always the name used in sitcoms when they taked about the slutty girl in high school or the girl with big boobs or whatever. I saw that episode of Will and Grace and laughed my butt off. For the record I'm not a slut.

I went all through elementary school with Jennifer A., Jennifer B., and Jennifer C. Kids seem fairly easy to name - just use a family name or a popular name. Same logic the use to name battleships, I guess. But how do you name your pets?! For naming pets, I generally pick something that will not be confused with a human name (Ive made one exeption which is Ziva). I inherited one named JennaBear. I've had Sugar, Soccer, O'Malley, Butter, Scotch, Snickers, Tigerball, Face (as in the A-team), Dragonfly, Glaze, Spice, Ghost, Wolf to name a few. I do this because I had a good friend who's daughter I babysat named Hailey. My cousin had a dog named Haliey that I would dog-sit. See the problem?

And they all end in a -y sound. And I have 4 dogs. It gets confusing. Brody, Riley, Annie, Molly. Someone I went to high school with just had a baby and named him Brody. All I think is "that's my dog's name!" I told my DH that I want a french bulldog next and I am going to name him Pierre. Or François.

At least I didn't have to worry about us choosing the same names as her. ;D

DH named our older dog Muttley because he is 100% Mutt. I mean you look at him and you are like dude how did this dog get here with his German Shepherd head, short stumpy legs, long body, and chow toungue. I told him when we got married he was not naming our children because they would be named like Boy or Girl or Human. Guess who came up with the name Benjamin .. it wasn't me. ;D OUr younger dog when we met her, had a very regal manner about her or so it seemed. We named her Anastacia which is just Anna. If we could rename her, I think we would rename her Schitzoid .

No one bothered to get his name on his birth certificate. So he picked his own name, which was his nickname, not the one his mother and father gave him!

Well, I don't have kids, but I have thought about what names I would like. They basically come down to two categories: Names that I really like and names that I will probably actually give the kids.
Names that I really like:
Boy: Dickon (can't use that for obvious reasons)
Girl: Cadence, Lyric, Tempest (Tempe for short) I have a musical background
Names I would probably use:
Boy: Sebastian, Oliver, Jonathan, Russell
Girl: Eleanor (Nora), Margaret, Lillian, Madeline

I wish, every day, that I had used Russell for my son. My husband vetoed it. I should have pushed harder.
My husband was being a real dick when trying to name my son.

We wanted names that were not too common, but not weird. Names that sound appropriate for a baby and an adult. Something that sounds pretty.
For both kids I asked DH if there were any names he liked, and then I made a list of names. With DD we were down to 2 names. He was going to let me pick my favorite, but then I asked him if he really liked the other name better, and he did. So we went with that name. And I'm glad we did.
With DS, again we narrowed the list to two names, and I let DH pick his favorite because I liked them both equally.

Honestly, it would probably cause at least some hurt feelings in my family if I used Russell. It is the last name of my great-aunt (grandmother's sister) and her family. I could see some people (grandmother and a cousin) thinking I was showing favoritism to that side of the family since I am really close to them. My grandmother and her sister have always had minor conflict between them.

I picked names that I, well ok we liked. And they all have at least one name that was a family name or very very very close friend.
I have NEVER met anyone with my name. First or middle. Did give my youngest dd my middle name as her middle. It's now a family name, not just something random that my mom pulled out of her ass to go with my first.

I'm Irish/Italian and there was never any pressure on me from either side of the family. You are a man, you pass your name down... This is not something we think about?

I laugh because on my MIL's side of the family, who are Italian, every guy is a Tony or a Phil.

My name was #52 the year I was born. My husband's name didn't make the top 100 for his year, though its not that unusual. We named our son Roger Aricin. Roger is a family name and Aricin I found on a baby name website and we both liked it and it sounded okay with Roger. For a girl it would be Liliana Carys for no other reason than I like it and the husband does too. If we have another boy then he will be Donovan. My father, who passed in 2006, was named Donald so that would be our way of honoring him without having the same exact name.

My dog, a yellow lab, is named Ariel because it is Hebrew and means Lion. People always say "awwwwww, you named her after the mermaid". Ugh. And I'd sound douchey telling them it's more like we named her after the former Prime Minister of Israel so I just nod. My cat is named Nutmeg because that's what the Humane Society had named her and I thought it was really cute.

I'm not sure about a baby yet (we've still got 20+ weeks to decide), but for pets you obviously use the names of the drummer, bassist, and lead singer of your favorite punk rock band.

My dad wanted to name me Ripley, after Siqourney Weaver's character in Alien. Mom kaboshed that, and named me the #1 most popular girls' name for that year I was born. I was 1 of 4 in my second grade class, so we all had to pick nicknames. I'm naming my hypothetical future daughter after my Mom's maiden name. It's a pretty normal sounding girl's first name, with a unique spelling.

It's a pretty normal sounding girl's first name, with a unique spelling. -------------- Why do people do that? Why mess up a perfectly good name with weird spelling? It just complictaes things.
