The first two kids both have family names for the first and middle name. We went with strong, more traditional names, with spellings that one would expect.
My third is named after my favorite fictional character.

She's my Erin girl. My feisty, redheaded Irish girl. Named after the whole damn country. feisty's a good word for her, like her mum. ;D can you let her know I thought the cheer squad did great last week? my sis and I went to the T-day rally on Wed, we also got a tour of the new HS afterward. dayum, that place is huge!

First name- preferably religious or biblical, fairly long to go with our short last name, but easily shortened, top 100, but preferably not top 10 Middle name -we do 2, one from each side of the family
With this baby I also wanted something that "goes" with DS and it had to be an uplifting name because this pregnancy made me pissy and I'm dreading the first year.
DS is Benjamin Edward Franklin (aka Ben) Baby girl is either going to be Jocelyn Naomi-Ann or Elysia Naomi-Ann (aka Josie or Elly). We won't decide for sure until we meet her.
eta: yeah, we know Elysia is a little out there, but I like it and the meaning

You got to go??!!! I had to work. Apparently part of it went viral. The dance bit with the teachers, not the cheerleaders. I've known the instigator since before he was born... ;D In terms of the high school...there isn't a space big enough to hold all the students, anywhere, except the fields. Did you notice the lack of bleachers? Please give us back our bazillion dollars and build something that accommodates our current students, as well as the projected upswell in three years.

When/if I have kids. First and foremost I want something that's professional and can work in the workplace. So really cutsie names would be out. Something short would be preferable, since I have a long last name. I would also try and find a balance of not naming my kid something too common (like a name on the list above) but at the same time not something strange or weird, so they won't get made fun of for their name? These are wonderful goals, but you may discover - as I did - that your spouse has different ideas and for some reason seems to think s/he should have some input as well. You may even find that your spouse thinks your long last name should not be used, either, depending on just how unwieldy it is. Actually, that was one of the things DH had in his favor - his last name was shorter and easier to spell than mine. I think it's cruel and unusual punishment to saddle a child with a really long - or God forbid - hyphenated name. It's a nice idea, but any parent who is considering the hyphenated name should be forced to write it out in print and then cursive 3000 times and then fill it in to scantron bubbles another 1000 times to simulate what they're about to put their child through in school. That's just mean.

yeah, we noticed, and commented to our tour guide (the English teacher that supervised my sis's student teaching semesters) on the tour. I was appalled at how little bleacher space there was, especially knowing the turnout from all the rallies over the years. we met up with Mr J (science teacher? he started the fall after I graduated) who told us the administration was nervous about the expected turnout, b/c they didn't really have a clue where they would have the active students corralled before last week either. hmm.....I got to go b/c I called in sick to work that day. I went out the night before w/some college friends and it didn't end well. we didn't order food until I'd had a couple, and I somehow proceeded to drink way more over the 6 hours at the bar than I thought possible. on the way out, I did a little pirouette and face plant in the parking lot, and ended up crashing at my friend's parents' house (where he was also crashing while home for the weekend) overnight. I drove home in the AM, took a quick shower, and headed to the HS. my PSA of the day - make sure you eat dinner before going out to drink w/college friends that can still drink like they are in college. oh, and viral? what I saw all over the news that night was from Billerica....?

I picked my kids names just because I liked them. I also wanted something not in the top 10 but not so weird people go "what?" when they hear the name. I have an unusual name with a less common spelling and I'm forever correcting both pronunciation and spelling.
DS is Seth. DD is Madeline and goes by Maddie. She's named after the children's book.

the wife and I looked through books and picked out names we liked the sound of and just kept trying different ones to see what fit. For both our girls we narrowed it down to a few and then when they were born we decided who they were based on what name fit them. Their middle names are grandmothers.

When is enough, enough? How many hyphenated surnames is enough?

I have an Alyvia Kate. I have loved the first name since I was in HS knew a girl with the name spelled that way. Turns out Olivia/Alyvia is now one of the top names, but since DH and I both have SUPER common names I think it fits well for our family. I have always loved Kate too and found out that last year it was a huge name because of Princess Kate (Catherine).

I really wanted Josephine for a girl's name, but NO... MIL had the cat from hell named Josephine and my DH said no way in hell. The cat tormented the DH and his siblings for 20 years and this was after they became adults! We also can't use any variation of Anna because that is our dog's name.

One of DD's best friends is named "Esther." Definitely an old name. It works for her.

Or maybe it's because of my love of margaritas....

What do you guys think of alliterative names? DH's first/last names start and end with the same letter, as do all his nephews' names (even the one in utero)... still not sure how I feel about it (although I like DH's name )

Or George Foreman kid-naming crazy. A kid or two with alliterative names is okay.

All this talk made me think of my grandmom and her sisters. I just realized I have no idea what my Aunt Teeny's actual name is. I know she's little and that's why everyone calls her Teeny, but for the love of god I have no idea what her given name is. But now I'm thinking about how old ladies have awesome nicknames. I have a great Aunt Dot (Dorothy) and a friend's grandmom is Pinky (real name is Violet). I want that. Meggie-Eggie isn't as awesome.

One year I had four Ashleys and three Matthews and two sets or something else (that I have forgotten). I asked the class, "Was there a shortage of names the year you were born?" It was really annoying. I actually had to do "Ashley G" and "Ashley R" to differentiate them. my college major's graduating class (of 45, mostly guys) had three Kristans, as the crew was collectively known - each of the three spelled it differently, none had an A. and no, none of the variations made the top 10 for 1978. Hahah! We had Sarah, Sarah, Sara, Kara, and Tara. At some point we all had a class together and we purposefully sat together just to annoy the profs. It was fun

My wife has crazy ideas for names, some she had picked up since high school. I want something plain/boring that is not in the top 10 and also not too exotic. Like Carl

One of the strongest, most learned women who shaped my life went by the name of Harry (Harriet).

Wouldn't the nic name for Meghan be Nutmeg? I worked with a Meg we called Nutmeg.
If I had children when I was young 1968 era they would have been Jamie for a boy and Amy for a girl. Jamie was a boys name short for James, my ex was a James and my grandfather and cousin and his cousin so we had too many Jimmy, Jim names and his wanted a son name James Austin after his grandfather and him.
I think the current names are stupid sounding but I am wrong, if you name a baby a name I would like they would stick out like a sore thumb. I like names like Helen, Karen, Susan, and bible names that aren't too strange like Michael, Mark, Luke, John.
You can almost tell how old some people are by the name like when Debbie Reynolds was popular we got a million Deborahs. I would avoid a name that was on the top 20 but pick from the next 20 or so and end up with a name that was popular but old fashion like David.

I just google the years my sons were born and their names were not in the top 10 for either of them. So I guess I was pretty unique for the year they were born, but not so unique now.
