I only get deluged with 'junk' mail from the places I've ordered from. Land's End and Amazon feel the need to send me 3 emails a day... and then there's the daily emails from a zillion other places I've shopped online. odds are they didn't sell your info - you told inadvertantly told them it was OK to share your info (most likely with subsidiararies or 'partners' or 'gee we thought you'd be interested in this company cause you're our customer - we're doing you a favor by letting them contact you!' There's usually a check box where you can decline getting additional emails... If you are getting email from places you've never purchased from - it may be because you didn't opt out of getting email from the affiliated companies of the places you've ordered from. Sometimes it's your Credit Card Company that does it because you didn't opt out of getting contacted by vendors that are 'similiar' or subsidiaries of places you've shopped. I don't mind the emails so much - they are easy enough to delete without opening. I'm really disliking the deluge of paper catalogs I'm getting - from the same places I get email. I have to walk those catalogs from the mailbox to the recycle bin. I tried to have them stopped - but that just resulted in more coming.

I've been getting a ton at work. And I know EXACTLY who sold my name. I had to use a particular title in dealing with one of our customers. It's the only place that I ever use that title. Bastards sold my name.

I've had a spamcatcher e-mail for years and anytime I order anything, that's the address they get. Retailers really abuse your e-mail address. There are some that e-mail me at least weekly with "deals". The e-mail program automatically deletes them after awhile and they're never opened. It saves me a whole lot of time to just be able to scan Subject lines on that account since sometimes it's something useful like a shipping confirmation.
Yesterday I donated blood and my e-mail address is in thier records. By the time I got home, they'd thanked me for "making an appointment"- exactly 8 weeks from now! I didn't make an appointment, but I'll keep it anyway. First, it's a way to express my profound thanks for the healthy body I've been given, and second, I get brownie points under my employer's wellness program for donating, which are adding up to a nice pile I can use to get stuff (iTunes gift cards, electronics) for free.
And no one gets my business e-mail address. Occasionally I miss an inconspicuous check box when I register for a conference and my e-mail address is "shared" with conference vendors. I set them straight at the first e-mail and tell them that they got my e-mail address without my knowledge or consent, and please remove me from their list.
