Maybe someone on this board can help me. I'm a widow and have recently been getting my thought process back. I read so much about the fiscal cliff or economic bust or food not being affordable or a myriad of other doomsday scenarios. But it appears there are multiple scenarios and the people talking about them really believe in them. How do I know if one is a true reality? This information is getting so overwhelming, it seems my only defense is to put my head in the sand and pretend all is well. Can anyone be prepared for every eventuality? This is a rather emotional request, but I'm thinking some on this board would be able to help me sort out what is real and what is not. Thank you. My advice is to turn off the TV. There is a lot of money to be made scaring people. And Vandal gave you excellent advice.

If that's the sort of thing you're concerned with, hon, it's better suited to Religious Discussions than to P&M.

Id, Many of us on these boards are drama queens. Ignore the doom and gloom. I agree with GG. Turn off the TV. In fact, I canceled my cable 2 years ago, and if the world ended today, I probably would not know about it for weeks! I'm still waiting for the world to end as prophesied when Medicare was introduced in 1966. Goldwater assured us in 1964 that the commies were going to take over America. JFK actually advised Americans to build bomb shelters in their basements. LBJ assured us that if the North Vietnamese took over South Vietnam, the commies would be in Hawaii in no time. Nixon assured us that he wasn't a crook, and Jimmy Carter told us that we were basically lazy. Bush II flew around to his appointments as the copilot of a fighter jet. Clinton did not have sex with that woman. Ford bumped his head, Reagan said that he had doubts about evolution, but he had to go home and ask Nancy about it before he made up his mind..
It is all just a passing parade of entertainment. Don't look for answers here. look for something to watch between "Days of our lives", and "All my Children". However, if you spend too much time here, you will have to sit through an hour of Oprah in order to regain your optimism.

Confusion is messing me up. So I better quit while I'm ahead. The poster that said I should turn off the TV (in my case the computer)and there's money to be made has a point. That's helpful. Simple and to the point. Thank you. Also the poster who gave a run down on the recent presidential history of our country was helpful. I just needed a push in the right direction. Thank you, too. Those are the things DH would say to me.

One of them PMed me and, despite my inability to communicate well, knew exactly what I was concerned about. He gave me some articles to read and I'm feeling lots better. ;D

Ford sales are up over expectations, Government Motors sales down below expectations. Similar to Congress, the Presidency and the Fiscal cliff. If the Government is involved, it is a disaster, whether in manufacturing or controling the economy.

What, in specific, did that government board member do to cause GM sales to drop? Did he nix a new car model? Kill the Corvette? Veto extra cup holders in the SUV's?

Back in the 1950's everyone called TV a vast wasteland. However, we had to get to this decade to find out just how bad TV could get...
As for me, I plan on watching one of my favorite movies on Netflix tonight, "High Noon"... or maybe Elmer Gantry.

Car sales may have been up, but please include truck sales, or do they not get included in your world? GM also had some big fleet orders in their numbers, which may or may not be repeated in the next month, if the Government does not buy anymore from them. I would suggest you go out and buy at least one really overpriced Chevy Volt to help them out. I know I will not be doing it.

GM has had a heck of a turn around in just three years.
Money well spent. Look at the economy in Ohio because of it.
GM has never had a better line up of cars as it does today.

Just bought another $15,000 in silver bars this morning. $33.80 an oz. Fiscal cliff is real, and obviously the President is not going to give in one iota on entitlements. i have been in metals for years. my % investment in this area recently went from about 40% to 60% Wow. You trust the ETFs for that or you doing physical?

The Fed govt holds a big equity stake in GM, though I would have to check on how much... Govt owns roughly a 26% of GM...

GM still has the highest labor costs of any auto manufacturer in the US. The problems GM faced before the govt bailout remain. The GM bailout was nothing but a vote buying spending frenzy by the Obama administration. Tens of thousands of non UAW workers(ie: good middle class jobs) were wiped out and/or pensions eliminated... Thousands of GM and Chrysler dealerships were close, eliminating 10s of thousands of good job. www.nationalreview.com/articles/313125/auto-bailout-casualties-john-berlau
