I am thinking that I may buy a wreath or one of those little 18 inch trees, and then buy the little wooden frame / ornaments from Michael's. I was going to have my kids decorate each frame for a year of their life, and then put a picture of them from that year. And then have one tree (or wreath) as a pictorial history.
Does that sound weird? Any ideas to make this work?

I buy wooden ornaments for the kids to color/paint every year. I had their name and year to the back when they are too small to write. I have many on my tree(which is already up) and will be adding 5 more this year. Oh there were a couple of years I made dough ornaments but that is a pain. They never would dry/bake.
I think I might have them make some this year out of the air dry clay. Sigh. It will be messy but will make great pics for the December Daily I am doing this year.

I think it’s a great idea. I have 3 children and have been making Christmas photo ornaments since they were born. I make at least 4 each year - one of each individual child and a family shot. I also made ornaments using pictures of my kids with grandma, etc. My oldest daughter is recently married so this year’s ornament for her will be a shot of the bride & groom. (I’ll make one for her and one for me.)
The kids are now 17, 22 and 23 so I have a lot of ornaments and use a separate tree to hold them all. To me, the tree is a beautiful 3-D scrapbook and really invites a lot of reminiscing and laughs when we all get together. I’m a bit shocked when someone will ask “Who’s that?” because to me it’s like the picture was just taken a few years ago.

I also started doing an ornament every year with my son (starting when he was two years old), most have pictures, a couple don't. He's now "graduated" to blowing his own glass ornament at a local glass shop. Depending on which shop he goes to he either just picks out his colors and blows in the tube when they tell him to, or, the one we're going to this year, they actually show them how to roll the glass around in the fire, dip it and roll it in the colors, then put it back in the fire, and blow it out. That place is much more hands on.
We bought my parents a metal ornament tree and all the grandkids were supposed to make ornaments every year for them (we all agreed to this since we are trying to avoid getting my parents more "stuff"--I store the tree and ornaments for them) but my son is the only one making them other than that first year we bought the tree. #sigh#
