Absolutely. You can be stopped for ANY reason. Like those nice smelly things in your car? If it hangs from your rear view mirror, you can be stopped. Have a toll booth thing on your windshield? You can be stopped. The list is endless. Nevertheless, stopping a lone person, female bad enough, late at night, was not a good or smart thing to do, period. I'm sorry she was put through it. It happened ONCE to DD but she did get the name and badge number. In fact wrote it down in front of him. He actually asked her "why?" The comment I made when she told me he asked her why would get me banned!

Good luck to you if you do that. DDs flavor of the month is almost done with cop school and I related this story to him. He felt the officer should have called for another officer to cover his ass!

It is not a problem to turn on blinkers, call 911 if possible and proceed to a safe place. Police officers will tell you to do so. Just google raped by man pretending to be police officer...
Cops have wives and daughters too... Safe is first.

...:::"In fact wrote it down in front of him. He actually asked her "why?" The comment I made when she told me he asked her why would get me banned!":::... Not if you share it via PM I agree with you that there may very well have been an element of "oooh, hot chick" in the decision to stop your DD. ...:::"It is not a problem to turn on blinkers, call 911 if possible and proceed to a safe place. Police officers will tell you to do so. Just google raped by man pretending to be police officer...":::... Very interesting. This would be tough if you didn't know the area. I wonder... if you drag the officer along for 20 minutes before stopping, will he/she be motivated to return the favor? ...:::"That's why I have a gun.":::... You'd have to be 120% sure of wrongdoing/fraud before pulling that out at a police officer though. So, if they ask you to get out of the car, can you refuse? I mean, I worry like, if I'm stopped with DW late at night and they get me out of the car.

I was responding to the call a crackhead remark. You have to tell the officer that you have a permit to carry. Technically if you aren't carrying at the time, you don't, but the lawyer that taught my class said to do it anyway.

WWBG, you can call and find out if your police have those cameras on their cars. It keeps them honest, too, for the most part.

In the holidays, you have large numbers of people driving a lot more than usual, often driving in places they don't routinely drive, and often after drinking. This is a recipe for accidents. The cops are trying to save lives, not spoil your holiday. Frankly, I was relieved when the cops started clamping down on the main drag I was driving on on Black Friday. 40% were driving like they were drunk and another 40% were driving like teenaged boys. Once the cops started pulling people over, folks at least slowed down and stopped drifting and weaving.

I doubt our local thought Husband was drunk at noon on Thanksgiving at the bottom of the hill ... I think he just had nowhere to be himself.

DD and her car search (the original post) and DS 2 got a ticket on the way home at the entrance to our lovely city, where he didn't see the speed limit sign. With three teens/early 20s driving home for the holidays, I tell them to be careful, but they do not listen to Mom. I had to plead with DS1 to PLEASE do not speed, because I didn't want all three kids with police encounters over the holiday (he made it back to school without any traffic stops!).

If you're going more than a short distance (i.e. if you don't see your safe destination in front of you you're supposed to call 911 so they can relay the information to the officer. I think someone on here actually did this and the cop had the 911 operator tell her where the next gas station was. So I would think if you told the 911 operator you aren't familiar with the area and is there a safe place to stop they could help you out. 911 will also know whether it's a legit cop or not - if it's an unmarked car they can find out if there's one in the area or if it's not a real cop and you shouldn't even stop in a safe place.

Well, in their defense, I was out yesterday driving 6 hours - 3 hours there and 3 hours back - to visit my mother who lives in an assisted living facility. 3/4 of the drive was over back country 2 lane roads and I figured there would not be a lot of traffic/police presence. I was wrong - I counted at least 10 police cars, none of them on the freeway, all of them on the two lane roads. I take this trip every two weeks and can't recall ever seeing a police car in the two lane stretch before.

There was a big stink in our little rural county several years back when a college student was driving through, headed to a state campground. Out of state tags, driving on a 2 lane. She got pulled over by one of our local deputies who said he wanted to search her car. She called her dad, a lawyer, and he told her not to allow the search. The deputy got beligerent, told her she must have something to hide if she wouldn't allow the search, called the sheriff, called out the drug sniffing dog, spent a long time peering through the windows trying to spot something incriminating, tried to get her to show him some items from her car, kept yelling at her that she obviously must be doing something illegal if she wouldn't allow the search. After over an hour they finally let her go, warning her to leave the county and never come back.
She was humiliated, there was a nasty letter to the editor of our small paper, but I don't know if anything legal ever came from it.
I think part of our problem is that we are a rural, very poor county and we're infamous for meth production. We don't have the money to hire really good quality deputies (I've seen their starting salary and it's peanuts) and unfortunately that means we sometimes end up with the Barney Fife types that not that bright but itching for a confrontation.

swamp - practically speaking - what are the consequences of refusing? Could they tail you all the way to the state line? In my experience, police are often jerks. Depends on how much of an ass the cop wants to be. Legally, they can't do anything if you refuse a search because refusal is not probable cause. They often call the K-9 in, and they take their sweet time getting there. They wanted to search ex's car once. He asked what if he said no, they said he would have to wait for a k-9 unit. So he let them search. They did the search & let him go. I always felt bad because the reason they wanted to do the search is the cop saw an unlabeled prescription bottle in the back seat. I used it to store lotion & it had fallen out of my purse back there. It was the first thing they looked at & when ex explained what it was the cop wanted to know what kind of lotion it was .

Not nearly as bad as Navy officers. It's that whole a ship captain's word is law thing I think. The majority of cops I've encountered are pretty cool as long as you don't get belligerent right off the bat. The majority of navy officers I've met are power tripping dickheads. And they seem shorter on average than officers from other branches. I don't know if the Navy appeals to guys with a Napoleon complex or I just encountered a skewed sample of them.

I had more problems with chiefs in the Navy on power trips than Officers during my enlistment. Maybe I was lucky since I worked mostly with pilots...

They probably are shorter than officers in other branches so they fit in the subs and ships tight spaces.
So the lesson here seems to be find out your state or any state you'll be driving in's laws. Seems like some states you can refuse and they basically can't do squat.

Now that you mention it the only senior enlisted Seamen I worked under was a power tripping ass too. At first I thought it was because I was Air Force so I was used to laid back folks who treat their enlisted soldiers like adults, and all the other branches would seem like power tripping control freaks in comparison. Then I worked with senior enlisted and officers from every branch and the Army and Marine guys were fine too. It's just senior Navy folks that are assholes.
