Last night we watched a full night of network sitcoms. Whatever all the new ones are on Fox - New Girl, The Mindy Project and Ben and Kate (or something like that.) Then we watched the local news after that. We laughed more at the local news that any of those sitcoms. I don't think our ancient weather man has any teeth, one of the stories was about the dangers of texting and snakes, and the story about the hate crime (I am so sad to say) included talking to the guy who got attacked, and the reason he and his friend couldn't get away is because his friend was having trouble getting on the handlebars of his bike. It must be hard to fill 22 minutes of content every night.
Do you watch your local news? Is it ridiculous?

Yes and yes.
It's almost like a parody, sometimes. Our local Fox station is a huge fan of the dramatic-to-ridiculous segues.
"What you don't know about your kitchen sink... COULD KILL YOU! And after the break, cats wearing pants!"

The smaller the town, the funnier (or sadder) the local news. We only have two network stations that have local news, NBC and FOX (and for those of you who want everyone to do without cable/satellite, those are the only over the air stations available where we live). It has been this way forever.
When we first moved here from the "big city" 25 years ago, the first story on the news was about a farmer who buried some dead cows in the summer, they rotted and exploded!

Oh - the other thing that made us laugh out loud...the story was about our state's petition to sucede from the union. They interviewed one of our politicians (maybe our state AG, or former AG? I can't remember.) And he was downright mean, and hilarious. He said "We can't even run our own state, could you imagine if we had to start an Army, print our own money? And I am horrified to even imagine who we would chose as ambassodors to send around the world!" Way to show faith in your state, big guy!

I watch the local CBS affiliate and the news story are okay - typical local fare - but the quality of the reporters has gone downhill the last year or two.
There is one reporter who peppers her ENTIRE reports with awful puns, not just one or two, but four or five in one short segment. It boggles the mind why the producers let her. The fact that she is always in oversized, dowdy clothes and looking like she forgot to comb her hair that day doesn't help.
One of the new weathergirls has a fake shade of blonde hair that can only come from a cheap, diy dye job with about an inch of dark roots showing. Her deep tan is a weird shade that is mix of too much tanning booth and the orangey spray-on look. I am so mesmerized by her strange appearance that I miss the forecast.
I don't expect reporters to be model pretty, but a professional appearance would be nice.

Half of the reporters had ethnic names (which has been standard for a long time) but they didn't seem to match the ethnicity that they appeared to be. An asian girl with the last name Rodriguez. A mexican looking guy with the last name Cohen. Melting pot indeed!

The grown ups have time off and I think they let the interns run the show. The newscasters appear to be about 12.

The male anchor pauses every time he says a hispanic reporter's last name and then does an exaggerated, accented prononciation rolling the r's. She doesn't pronounce her name that way (or even have at trace of an hispanic accent) so I don't get why he feels the need.

Um yeah, our local "weekend anchor" did the weekend news drunk last year. Ended up being joked about on Letterman. She was subsequently fired, charged with a DUI and went to treatment. We don't have her to mock anymore but hey- our weatherman is a total perv and has a serious foot fetish so that's something. I don't watch the local news unless there is a specific news article that I know will be on. Of course I try to avoid reading our local newspaper too- it's a complete waste of paper.

Our fox morning news is pure comedic relief. Absolutely un-politically correct. Half the time DH and I end up looking at each other and one will say "I can't believe they just said that live!!" Its like what would happen if the cast from the Office worked at a news station instead. Then our favorite guy committed suicide last year Its not nearly as funny without him.

We don't watch local news because all they talk about is crime. There is almost nothing about local politics or anything else. It is rather depressing.

I am convinced that to prank the newest anchors (especially new-to-the-area ones), they fill up the local newscast with local hard-to-pronounce place names that get entertainingly mangled by those reading from teleprompters.

Back in my teens, a new channel started up: "A Channel". And in their 6:00 PM timeslot: "A Channel News". For the first few weeks, I swear there was more footage of sweating, desperately smiling TV anchors waiting for the scene to cut than there was of actual news program. And now we go to Darr Macbool for the weather forecast. How's it looking out there, Darr?

Good Day Philadelphia on our local Fox affiliate is my favorite morning show because everyone cracks me up! I'll be watching, eating my Cheerios, and then all of a sudden I'm like 'did he just say what I think he said?!'

In the background there was a guy pretending he was yanking off with his fishing pole - for the camera. Apparently they don't have an editor or something? The other night the weather guy pointed to the OR/CA border and said "here at the Washington Oregon border..." Must have public CA education. On voting night the caption at the bottom of the trailer for the news said "Americans Vote" and the image in the background was, I can't make this stuff up...., a cat's ass. Cat walking around in circles showing the camera it's butt. No sign of anything to actually do with voting.

I think the quality of reporting and jounalism has been degrading for some time. There's really no money in journalism anymore.

Local news is the worst! I swear our local news should just be called "The horrible things that happened near you today" or "Can you be-LIEVE all these freaks live right around you? " or "Dude, whatever you do, don't go outside!" Ugh. I try not to watch it. It sounds like some of you have way funnier local news than I do though.

I rarely watch the local news anymore but I will go online and read it. When I first moved here (back in 2000) I was amazed at the amount of time the local stations spent on high school football. I sat there shaking my head and thinking it's high school football for goodness sakes. You would have thought these kids were playing in the NFL or something. Good grief... welcome to TX, I guess...

I had had teh same thought about where I live! What's with all the high school sports? It's weird. And I didn't realize you were in Texas. Are you hoping to secede?

A gal I knew had season tickets to the high school games - and they cost more than season tickets to the college games. I don't know what college - probably a crappy one.

One of my major shocks coming to rural Iowa was local news. Even Des Moines news stations were so much better than these very small markets.
I ended up watching the NBC affiliate because they have a "reporter" in the town where I am located. That means we do get some coverage. CBS and ABC act like we don't exist. Of course, on the station I watch, the rest of the state does not exist let alone the rest of the country.
We're in the midst of high school football playoffs so that is dominating the news right now.
Most of the reporters appear to be fresh out of college. One anchor is probably as old as me and I'm told it's the only station where he has ever worked. He's good, so I'm guessing he's had other opportunities and chose to stay.

I have told my 16 year old he is grounded from watching or reading the news! I love that he LOVES staying informed, but OMG he will follow me around the house, or today...the health clinic, rambling on and on about the latest news article he read or watched...
