I had CP as a kid and have some scars to prove it and my case was much worse than a common cold. I had shingles in my 30s. That is not an experience I wish on anyone. Get the vaccine. I think I was 8 months old when I had chicken pox. My Mom had 3 of us with it at the same time and I was the worst case. She says I slept though it.

Shingles do hurt like hell and itch. Mine were on my abdomen, right at the waist line. Wearing any pair of pants was extremely painful.

My mom had all 4 children come down with it at the same time. In a hotel room. We were in the process of moving and the house wasn't ready yet. So we all got CP together in a frakkin' hotel room. My poor mom!!!

My sister was thrilled when her kids all got the CP at the same time. She said it was terrible for 3 weeks, and then - she was done with them forever.

My younger sister never did get it. In 2nd grade, 3/4 of the class was out with chicken pox but not her. The rest of the class was out the next year, but not her. She either had such a light case no one realized she had it or she was immune. People are weird.

My poor mom!!! I got CP by myself as I caught it before I had siblings. However, I remember my mom saying she was scared shitless while I was sick. Apparently I was running 104-105 degree temps and she couldn't break my fever. I must have been 3 at the time, since my sister was born soon afterwards. Then she and my brother caught them together.

If the rest of the household weren't raging cases at the time, her case might have been missed entirely, I think. It was by far worse for the two older ones than the two little kids in our family. Both with pox and with sickness.

Same with me. I have a scar above my one eyebrow from CP. I didn't have them very bad, and then my poor baby brother got them, and he got it really bad. He had chicken pox in his mouth and everything. We had a trip planned to visit family in Chicago. My dad ended up taking me and my other brother, and my stayed home with my youngest brother.

This has been a very interesting thread for me since things have changed so much since my children were babies (late 80's/early 90's). I admit, I'm a bit scared of DGD developing autism but that doesn't stop us from getting her vaccinated. I think my fear is based more on stories I've heard about children who hit milestones early and then regressed. DGD will be a year old next week and is one that appears to be doing nearly everything earlier than "normal". However, we have no history of it in my family nor in her father's family that I've heard so far.
Now I do have one question for the "experts" here. It was mentioned that mercury has been removed from vaccines and that it was once thought that it contributed to autism rates. BUT since its removal/reduction in so many facets of our life, autism rates have actually soared. So I'm wondering if there maybe there IS a link between mercury and autism but not as a cause but more along the lines that limited exposure "suppresses" it.
Far out idea I know but its just one of those ideas that I occassionally get and then dig for info until I'm satisified one way or the other.

I know a number of posters have said the same thing. I've had the flu dozens of times (different variants, obviously), and it's never been more than a mild inconvenience. That's usually food poisoning or another infection. Influenza is a nasty beast.

I know a number of posters have said the same thing. I've had the flu dozens of times (different variants, obviously), and it's never been more than a mild inconvenience. That's usually food poisoning or another infection. Influenza is a nasty beast. Symptoms of what I call "the flu" are: high fever, extremely low energy, aching muscle pains, weakness, foggy head, loss of taste and smell, chills and general discomfort. Lasts for 2-5 days. For "stomach flu" or "food poisoning", add to that list: nausea and vomiting every 2-3 hours. "Flu" is distinct from "a cold" in that it lacks: watery eyes, runny nose, sore throat (usually), coughing, sneezing, and respiratory distress. In my lifetime, I've had 16-or-so colds, six or seven cases of what I call "the flu" above, and about six or seven cases of "stomach flu/food poisoning". How these illnesses actually break down in terms of viral and bacterial infections, I don't know.
