Okay, this has been bothering me for a day or two. They are apparently imposing gas rationing in NY and/or NJ due to the problems, based on the odd/even numbers of your car's license plate. Okay, so far so good. But all I see in the news are lines of people standing with gas cans. How the heck do they determine who is odd and who is even if it's a guy carrying a gas can? I'm assuming many in NY don't even own a car. There must be something I'm missing here. Someone explain this to me, please? It's bugging me!

Generators need gas.....a lot of it. Since generators are supplying livable conditions without power, I imagine it trumps driving.
My dad told me his generator running at half power goes through 5 gallons in 14 hours.

So they're letting all the gas cans fill up but not the drivers? Wouldn't drivers just use a gas can and use that line instead of waiting for their assigned day?

Gas can people can go any day. Before the odd even thing, the gas line would be for blocks, creating major traffic problems. The gas can people don't take up too much room.

I saw people lining up in the breakdown lane for blocks on end last weekend on Long Island, overnight so they'd be in line when the place opened up the next morning. odd/even rationing totally made a difference.

Okay, the room taken up by the different lines makes some sense. Thanks!

In Manhattan not as many people own cars but in the other 4 boroughs that also make up NYC most people do have cars. Also in Long Island you really can't get around without a car. I live in Queens but not near any subways and not near many buses so a car is absolutely necessary. Gas cans are getting hard to come by otherwise I think more people would buy them and wait in that line instead. According to our mayor though, only 25% of gas stations are actually open, so the long lines are mostly because of that.
