I generally don't respond. But since I have no poker face, I don't really need to say anything.

I think the best thing to do is to ask her for a loan.

Another smile and nod or "That's cool" responder... except I do kinda pay attention to whatever silly thing they are doing or buying or spending money on... some of the people who recite back things they've heard (or attempt to do/emulate stuff they've seen) because they think it's cool/good/what everyone else is doing are sometimes good barometers for trends (and companies to invest in).

I usually try and give advice, and then when the person turns on me, I just close down this site and don't go back to any more TLoony threads.

I start laughing with my WTF face on! I agree because 'smile and nod' is a wrong message that you sending to a stupid person. And do you want to be doing this, really? 'laughing with my WTF face on' makes stupid person feel that they saying something stupid and they might ask you 'whats wrong with your WTF face;... THERE you tell them whole 9 yard of how stupid what they are saying is because... and this is how this relationship ends! Plain and simple. You free to go have your latte now. Wait! You can't 'make' latte can you?

It's preferable to telling people they're stupid.

I know of several threads that indicate that the financially stupid people don't feel that they are saying something stupid even when you I think its because one person understanding of 'stupid' might be total opposite to another person understanding of 'stupid'...it is common not only in financial but other aspects of life. Nothing new or shocking. I sometimes don't think people are right even when they INSIST and scream in my face 'I AM RIGHT'...and its my right as a human being to have my own opinion about others opinions. No? So I normally tell people what I think and move on. So far worked as a charm!

Thank you all for a truly comical thread. I just read a few posts to my husband who is still laughing as I type. Isn't it great that a group of people can finally come to the conclusion that stupid is as stupid does..... I think. ;D

For someone who was supposed to be stupid, Forrest Gump was right on the money!

I have a younger co-worker that knows I have an interest in personal finance. I was explaining to him one day how some people invest their cash by laddering CD's, and that the returns aren't that great, but better than a savings account. The next day he told me that he and his wife were looking into it and that they decided they are going to cash out her old 401k and put it in a 1 year CD paying 2% because they would be able to double the money in 1 year according to their calculations.
I looked at him and said - No way! That's impossible! You're not calculating it right!. I tried to explain to him the rule of 72 and he mentioned that he has a buddy that is a financial advisor, so I told him to run everything by that person before he does anything at all.
I know I made him feel stupid, but at least I got the message across. We haven't talked money or finance since.

For someone who was supposed to be stupid, Forrest Gump was right on the money! Yes, but in Forrest's case, part of the reason he was right on the money was because he had a big cushion of it.....Bwahahaha ! This ( my poor joke ) reminds me of an old joke you can even tell your grandma or minister:: "Why couldn't they play cards on Noah's Ark ? " Because he was sitting on the deck !!! "
